In Grand County, we’ve seen firsthand how fragile that connection can be.

In 2020, the East Troublesome Fire roared across the county, cutting power, phone lines, and internet access. Local residents were left searching for information in real time. Then came the Devil’s Thumb Fire in 2024 and the Windy Gap Fire in 2025, each reminding us that even when flames aren’t at our doorstep, power outages, wind damage, and infrastructure failures can leave entire towns in the dark.

Fraser Valley Community Media (FVCM) — home to KFFR 88.3FM and KWTR 89.1FM — is leading a countywide initiative to make sure that never happens again.

The Emergency Preparedness & Broadcast Resilience Project will install battery backup systems at our three key broadcast sites:

• KFFR Studio (Granby) – to keep programming active

• Granby Ranch Transmitter – to relay countywide broadcasts

• KWTR 89.1FM (Bullfrog at Winter Park Resort) – to serve as the primary emergency alert source

These systems will ensure continuous, reliable communication during power or internet outages — keeping our emergency broadcasts, weather alerts, and local updates on the air when our community needs them most.
