Overview

We are members of Happy Crew and our mission is to destigmatize mental health issues by creating community and sharing the message, “YOU MATTER, YOU BELONG”, especially among our peers.  We must remain diligent in our campaign because depression, anxiety, and suicide are major issues for our friends – Colorado ranks sixth in the nation for most teen deaths by suicide.  Too many of our peers face a daily struggle to talk about their mental health and we crusade to end the stigma and increase positive options for those facing mental health issues.

Background Statement

The Happy Crew (formerly 1 Liquid House) is a Colorado 501(c)3 charity that equips at-risk teens in Douglas County with evidence-based, suicide prevention strategies and a safe, supportive community, helping youth to build resiliency and reduce the stigma of mental illness.

In response to 12 youth suicides in Douglas County between 2001 and 2002, The Happy Crew was founded by executive director Amy Mays and a diverse, talented, and dedicated network of community leaders. Their mission is to help youth address mental illness before it leads to self-harm. The Happy Crew’s youth participants are empowered to be change- makers in their areas of influence, destigmatizing mental health issues while forming a transformational community and sharing the message YOU MATTER, YOU BELONG.

Since its formation in 2002, The Happy Crew has operated as a mentoring network focused on creating activities and events that provide opportunities to connect with and equip youth with evidence- based, preventative strategies so that they can impact their peers struggling to overcome depression, anxiety, loneliness, suicide, and other mental health issues.

The Happy Crew serves 170+ students representing five cities (Castle Pines, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Lone Tree, and Castle Rock, CO) annually, and since its founding, its student participants have reported 1) increased awareness of mental health best practices and 2) increased engagement with these issues in their personal lives. And many return to the Happy Crew to volunteer as mentors, student leaders, or board members.
