On September 23, 2012 Laura McDermott was killed in a tragic hit and run accident. The world lost a beautiful and inspiring woman that day. Laura's zest for life inspired us to turn our loss into a celebration of her life.
Laura's fun loving nature and love for travel led us to an obvious collaboration between our event and Ecology Project International. In 2013, we hosted our first annual memorial cornhole tournament. We raised $3635 for EPI and were able to send 7 students on a trip to Yellowstone National Park. After 8 years, and raising over $15,000 for EPI, we made the decision to direct our funds to a Colorado based, local organization.
After years of working with Cal-Wood through my school's outdoor education program, I experienced firsthand the direct impact that Cal-Wood's programing has on students. Cal-Wood suffered a great deal in 2020 from the impacts of Covid, and also the wildfire that threatened to completely destroy the property. It only made sense to partner with Cal-Wood for our event.
This year our goal is to raise $5000 to donate to Cal-Wood in memory of Laura. That money will be used for scholarship programs for low-income families and students, as well as fire restoration.
This year's event will be held on Saturday, October 15th in Wash Park in Denver. The event will start at 1:00pm and costs $25/person to play.
