Started in 2013 and having served more than 1,100 residents, the Community College of Aurora (CCA)’s Citizenship Preparation Class has become more than just a place to study for the naturalization test—it is a place where stories of courage, perseverance, and new beginnings come together. After each 10-week term, CCA students go on to pass their naturalization exam and proudly take the Oath of Allegiance, pledging to “support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America,” and to “honor and protect the United States.”
Among these students are remarkable individuals who remind us of the strength and diversity that new citizens bring to the country.
One couple from Vietnam walked their journey side by side, preparing for the test together, encouraging one another, and ultimately becoming citizens at the same ceremony. Their shared experience deepened their commitment—not just to each other, but to their new homeland.
A woman who worked in the cafeteria of the Aurora Municipal Building gained a unique perspective on citizenship through her daily experiences. Watching government employees serve the public with dedication inspired her to take her place in the democratic process and pursue her own path to citizenship.
Finally, a young man from Venezuela, studying law, brought a passion for justice and civic responsibility to the class. His goal is to use his education to contribute meaningfully to society, and his new citizenship represents a critical step toward that dream.
These stories are powerful reminders that citizenship is not just a legal status—it is a commitment to belonging, contributing, and upholding the values of our nation. Each new citizen who walks through the doors of the Community College of Aurora brings with them a unique history, a bright future, and a deep sense of responsibility to their adopted country. Their journeys enrich us all and strengthen the promise of what it means to be an American.
Advancing Economic Mobility Fund Overview:
To ensure current and future students can participate in the college’s Citizenship Preparation sessions, the Community College of Aurora (CCA) Foundation created the Advancing Economic Mobility Fund. This fund will support CCA to provide eight (8), 10-week Citizenship Preparation sessions per year that offer:
- 40 hours of comprehensive instruction in US history and civics along with vocabulary found on the naturalization application.
- Student success services such as access to nutrition, transportation, and mental health counseling.
- Hands-on learning through audio, visual, real-world simulation activities (mock interviews, group reading and listening activities, digital literacy, and two integration activities per session, such as virtual walking tours of Washington, D.C., and guest speakers from the Aurora Police Department and other state, county and local departments).
Program Outcomes:
- With an average class size of 13 students, CCA has served learners from over 73 countries through its Citizenship Preparation sessions and English as a Second Language classes.
- During 2019-2023, 110 students passed the naturalization interview.
- 75% of students demonstrated improved English language skills on pre- and post-tests.
Program Costs:
- Each 10-week Citizenship Preparation session costs $3,750, with an annual cost of $30,000 for CCA’s eight, 10-week sessions.
- Under a US Department of Homeland Security grant that is no longer available, student tuition was $30 for the 10-week session. Moving forward, the college plans to offer these sessions at no cost to the students so that this would truly be an endeavor funded by the community, for the community!
