Denver7 Gives thanks to volunteers in Five Points, providing more than just a hot meal
" It may seem small, but giving someone in need a hot meal can have one of the biggest impacts on their lives, especially during the holidays.
That's how the Community Outreach Services Center in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood gets people through the doors.
But they offer visitors so much more than that.
“We provide basic needs, housing, peer support, employment and community wealth building,” LaShawn Marshall, who works at the center, told Denver7. “We’re just a little portion that do our part and we're just trying to help break down the needs of the people.”
Agape Soul Food Pantry: Feed Your Soul
Over 33% of Coloradans are food insecure. 16 % of Colorado children are not receiving adequate nutrition due to financial constraints. 20% of adults regularly skip or cut back on meals because there was no money to buy food. (Hunger Free Colorado, COVID Food Insecurity Survey, April 2021.)
The Agape Soul Food Pantry ministry serves the community need through the following food justice programs:
What's Up Wednesdays/Communal Saturday: 2 weekly community meals for our peers on the streets to nourish their body, soul and mind. (Average 450 meals per month)
Agape Soul Food Pantry: a food justice ministry providing meats, fish, poultry, produce and canned goods to anyone one in need every Friday and during the week on demand. (Average 250 food boxes per month).
The Agape Soul Food Pantry Ministry has witnessed first-hand significant growth in need in the Denver Metro area due to inflation, income inequity, and migration. The growth in demand has exhausted our budget to continue to provide meats, poultry, and fish at the Agape Soul Food Pantry.
