Friends of Coal Creek - Sustaining Members

Just a few hours ago, a beaver lifted her head above the surface of the creek, painted rosy with the first light of dawn, and exhaled. Water spilled over the twigs and teasel stalks she laid into her dam last night, enough for now. Somewhere, gliding along the bottom of the creek and raising curlicues of mud behind her, she arrived back her burrow to rest. 

Above, in a rising rabble of beaks and legs and feathers, the pairs of great blue herons are waiting in that same dawn glow in that same ribbon of cottonwood-shaded ribbon of green for their eggs to stir. All this within a few hundred yards of each other and a busy road.

This is the nature we have but what is the nature we deserve? Will it increase on a wave of support or decrease on a wave of development, forced at first to the margins and then beyond them?

For Earth Week this year, we’re tuning in our attention to the littlest moments that seem so fragile and fleeting but coalesce into processes ancient and unnoticed and to which we, too, subscribe and follow and flow. It’s a way of understanding we’re calling Earth@now.

How many Earth@now moments do you notice during the day or hear through your windows at night when the owls and coyotes mix their calls with the waves of passing traffic? How many Earth@now moments has the creek yielded to you? How many did you miss?

Earth Week happens to coincide with our birthday, and this year we’re turning 2. We have matured from an idealistic startup into a strong organization with clear goals and a sound strategy. Will you consider cementing your support for the creek with a recurring monthly donation?
