In 2014 after years of work on the issue of labor exploitation in the agricultural sector, a western slope group comprised of county agency employees and other community advocates decided to establish Western Slope Against Trafficking. We have been affiliated to The Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking since our inception and, since Dr. Tom Acker’s membership on the Colorado Human Trafficking Council (2014-2022), we have been trained trainers to inform the community of what human trafficking is and what it is not. Our members include a staffer from the Western Slope Children's Center, a former director of a trafficked women survivors' center and a lived experience expert. Our quarterly meetings bring together law enforcement, LBGTQ advocates, a Native American service provider and a police officer specialized in serving the houseless community among others. Besides our community outreach efforts, we have also provided help to human trafficking survivors living in our community.
