We discovered Adam’s Camp during our first summer in Denver, when 5-year-old Archie joined as a camper. I’m still searching for the right words to describe what it opened up in him, and in me.
Around that time, I finished The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, a novel inspired by the author’s own time working at a camp for children with disabilities. It’s where he learned tikkun olam — “repair the world” — and the lifelong value of inclusivity, love, and acceptance. Exactly what I felt at Adam’s Camp.
I’ve now seen the transformative impact twice: kids with intellectual and developmental disabilities building friendships, confidence, and independence.
- Specialized, individualized programs
- Joyful, skilled staff who meet kids where they are
- A fully inclusive community
- Scholarships that make camp accessible to all
Our family is fortunate to have strong support. It’s not lost on me that a week at Adam’s Camp may be the only respite many families receive.
We’re living longer, facing more chronic conditions, and navigating an epidemic of loneliness. Eventually, we’ll all have heightened functional needs. Places like Adam’s Camp remind us how to care for one another.
If you’re able, please help bring this joy to more kids like Archie (winner of the 2026 “Charming Cuddlebug” award!), to the many children who show us our shared humanity.
