For the good of all

I'm coming up on 5 years with The Civic Canopy and there's (truly) nowhere else I'd rather be. I'm so proud of our team and grateful that every day I get to work with the best people. 

This year, we've been recentering on the word "civic." To be honest, I never really thought about our work as "civics" until Kale, my colleague, pointed it out and it's completely reshaped how I view our work. I didn't take civics in high school and have never considered myself to be "politically-active." Kale described to me how she thinks of our work as everyday democracy and that we get to teach people how democratic practices can be used across collaborative work.

Simply, we support groups of people who want to work together toward a change they want to see. Sometimes it's folks looking to start a coalition to provide free and low-cost outdoor programs in a community, nonprofits and parents working together to support our state's children, or connecting community members to tools and resources to drive their work forward. We facilitate a process that includes practices like shared decision-making, participatory budgeting, inclusion, emergent learning, etc. The beautiful thing is that we know these processes can be replicated across collaborative efforts - from the political space to your family's next potluck and everything in between.
