Since 1995, Child Advocates – Denver CASA has been a steadfast champion for children and families navigating the complexities of the court system in Denver’s 2nd Judicial District. For over 30 years, our dedicated staff have empowered thousands of volunteers with the training, support, and guidance needed to become compassionate, knowledgeable, and consistent advocates.
This Colorado Gives Day; we are coming together as a staff to raise money for Child Advocates - Denver CASA! As a team who works with our volunteers every day, we know first-hand that many of the children and youth we serve need a consistent, caring adult in their lives - something a CASA Volunteer is uniquely positioned to do. Our work relies on the generosity of individual and corporate donors to continue training quality, expert volunteers to advocate for children.
Below you can find a story of a successful case shared by one of our Advocate Supervisors that touched all of our hearts:
Zhi, who is deaf, came to the United States from China at the age of six. With no language skills and limited support, he faced immense challenges. Though he was adopted by a family with hearing impairments, the placement proved unstable.
At age 10, Zhi entered the child welfare system under a Dependency and Neglect (D&N) case. Now 17, he has spent much of his time with a consistent and supportive foster father. But it was clear he needed more—someone to truly advocate for his unique needs.
That someone was Nicole.
Nicole, a CASA Volunteer, brought a rare combination of experience and empathy to Zhi’s case. With a background in international adoption—specifically from China—and a degree in American Sign Language, she was uniquely equipped to understand and support Zhi.
When Zhi had trouble waking up on time for school, Nicole worked tirelessly with his team to ensure he had the tools he needed to thrive. Zhi was supported with video relay services, a phone, and visual alarms including a bed shaker and strobe lights. For the first time, Zhi could wake up independently and arrive on time to school—small victories that helped him stay on track with his education.
There are still challenges ahead, but Zhi is thriving. His confidence is growing, his world is expanding, and his future looks promising.
All because one advocate found her voice —and used it to change one life.
There are many cases like this where a CASA Volunteer makes all the difference. We are asking for your help to ensure Denver CASA can continue providing these essential volunteer services. State and federal funding cuts are felt around the country and yet cases are getting more complicated with more diverse needs. Your matched contribution could not come at a more important time. Thank you for your support.
