Some kids like band.
But for some kids, band is their thing.
It’s where they belong. It’s where they feel confident. It’s where they finally feel like themselves.
Right now, a generous donor has offered a $1,000 matching challenge for camp scholarship donations. That means every dollar you give helps twice as many students experience camp.
Picture a 12-year-old who happens to be one of those kids. Let’s call them River. Maybe River plays the clarinet.
River practices when no one asks them to. They look forward to band rehearsal all week. They listen closely when the teacher demonstrates a new phrase, determined to get it just right. Band isn’t just another class for River. It’s the place where everything clicks.
Now imagine River arriving at summer band camp.
River eats breakfast surrounded by a whole cafeteria full of band kids who love music just as much as they do. Soon they’re in a full ensemble rehearsal, the room buzzing with sound as dozens of musicians play together. Later there might be frisbee golf outside, then clarinet sectionals with other players who share tips, laugh about squeaky notes, and figure out how to make the music shine.
Lunch in the cafeteria. Another rehearsal. Maybe a workshop that introduces River to a whole musical world they never knew existed.
And every day, something new.
By the last night of camp, River is dancing and laughing with friends who, just four days earlier, were complete strangers. The shy hello to a new roommate has turned into a friendship that feels like it’s been there forever.
Then comes the final concert.
Parents fill the audience. River walks onto the stage of a real concert hall, heart racing just a little, clarinet in hand. The music starts. Everything they worked on all week comes together in that moment.
On the car ride home, the stories begin.
The nervous first meeting with a roommate who is now a best friend.
The hilarious rehearsal moment when the whole section cracked up.
The college clarinet counselor who showed River a new way to practice high notes.
The feeling of playing in a huge ensemble and realizing, “I belong here.”
It might just become the highlight of River’s entire summer.
But for some families, camp can feel out of reach.
River’s family wants to support this love of music more than anything. They know how meaningful camp would be. But gas prices keep rising. Groceries cost more every month. The paycheck stretches only so far.
They want River to go.
They just don’t know how to make it happen this year.
That’s where you come in.
Your gift can be the reason River boards the bus to camp.
Your generosity can be the reason River meets those friends, plays that concert, and comes home bursting with stories.
Even small gifts make a real difference.
$30 can cover a full day of meals for a camper like River.
$100 helps cover music, materials, and workshops during camp.
$250 helps provide housing and supervision for a camper.
$699 can fund a camp scholarship.
Your support helps turn “I wish I could go” into “Camp was the best week of my summer.”
And for a kid like River, that week can last a lifetime.
