Mission Statement

We SPARK CHANGE and INSPIRE A MOVEMENT OF GOOD through the power of volunteerism, service and civic engagement.

Organization History

Spark the Change Colorado, formerly Metro Volunteers, was formed in 1994 as the result of a merger between the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and the Volunteer Center, a program of the Mile High United Way (MHUW). Between 1994 and 2003, the organization operated programs that fulfilled a two-fold mission statement to build the effectiveness of nonprofits (from TAC) and connect people with volunteer opportunities (from the Volunteer Center).

In 2004, the Metro Volunteers Board and staff decided that the agency could have a greater impact on the community if it focused its mission solely on volunteerism. During the same time, Metro Volunteers became an affiliate of the Hands On Network, a national alliance of volunteer organizations whose mission is to transform people and communities through service and civic engagement.

In 2018, Metro Volunteers became Spark the Change Colorado. We wanted a name that encompassed the entire state of Colorado and the action of the changemakers who volunteer here!

Spark the Change Colorado currently provides direct service programs including : The Mental Wellness Program, Senior Companion Program, & RSVP. We also provide training support in Board Leadership, Skilled Volunteering, Service Enterprise, Volunteer Engagement, and Disaster Response & Recovery Volunteering. We provide additional services for Group/Corporate Volunteering and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Testimonials

"I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the VETP classes! For me, being one of the new ones within this profession, it was beyond helpful! I had no idea my life was about to change in such a fun way with my career. It is a perfect fit for me. I think you ladies are doing a great job with the sessions. Thank for you helping me get situated in my new career. I appreciate you and all you do."
-Stephanie Winther, Springs Rescue Mission on Spark the Change Colorado's Volunteer Engagement Training Program (VETP)

"Being new to this Volunteer Coordinator position, I am really soaking up everything! We are wanting to re-vamp our volunteer program. This is all really helping me with talking with Volunteers, Staff and Administration about the steps we can take to improve things with PURPOSE!"
-anonymous post-training survey on Spark the Change Colorado's VETP

"In the past the education I have received has typically been about dealing with them and their illness, but not focusing on my needs.  Hearing from other families and what we all go through at one point or another, has been a source of comfort and initial steps in healing for me as well. I am beyond grateful to have found this blessing of a resource and look ahead to one day paying the kindness forward to others. Thank you for the services you provide."
-R.A. on Spark the Change Colorado's Mental Wellness Program: Family of Addicts Support Group

"Spark the Change is professional, knowledgeable, flexible, communicative, trustworthy and dependable. Our social work students are well-cared for by the volunteers working from Spark. The agencies with whom we work in the community have enjoyed the partnership as well, and many agencies are now able to host students as interns because of the relationship, and would not have been able to otherwise."
-Callico Vargas, MSW Field Coordinator at CSU-Pueblo on Spark the Change Colorado's Mental Wellness Program (MWP)

"Board service has been an extremely meaningful volunteer experience for me. First, I feel like I have made a real contribution to the organization and to the larger community. Second, my board service has been a very valuable professional development opportunity. Lastly, I have met and connected with so many wonderful people by volunteering on a board. I would highly recommend board service to anyone."
-Tom Brinegar, Vice President of Peak Resources, Inc. on Spark the Change Colorado's Employee Volunteer Program

"Denver Transit Partners enlisted the services of [Spark the Change] to execute our volunteer day, making it a turn-key event for our team. [Spark the Change] planned our Day of Service to meet our desire to provide three event options so that employees could select a project most suited to their interests. This is an event we hope to continue for many years."
-Laura Rinker, Denver Transit Partners, on Spark the Change Colorado's Managed Days of Service

"[Spark the Change] provides excellent service. I wanted to offer a volunteer opportunity for Great-West Financial employees and family members, but didn't have bandwidth to take the project on myself. They worked with me to organize a project that aligned with employee interests and availability, purchased needed supplies ahead of time and provided onsite management. Overall, [Spark the Change] created a rewarding and positive volunteer experience that left employees looking forward to the next event!"
-Christina Frantz, Great-West Financial, on Spark the Change Colorado's Managed Days of Service
