Testimonials

Last summer, Katrina found herself walking to Sister Carmen's food bank with her young son. She had car trouble and was saving for the necessary repairs, but she couldn't walk far due to her son's age and the unbearable heat. Still, they needed food. It was so difficult to keep her son entertained during the long summer days and even getting to the library was out of their circle of transportation, let alone the grocery store or food bank. Thankfully, Sister Carmen was able to ease at least some of the burden by providing her a bike. "I absolutely love my bike! This gets us one step closer to being able to get around much much easier." - Katrina, SCCC Participant

"My name is Joe, I am 50 years old and live in Lafayette, CO. As I am leaving Sister Carmen's Food Pantry today I am so very grateful. We all have our hard luck stories and I am NO different. I lost my legs as a child and raised a son as a single parent. Medical equipment is so expensive that after my wheelchair became shambles, I had no way of getting a new chair because my budget is so close that I cannot pay the co pay fee. Today I am in a new wheelchair because I am able to feed my son and myself because of the unbelievable kindness of Sister Carmen and their donors. Today we will have fresh fruit as well as vegetables and MILK. The weather has changed and as a final blessing I am offered a clean, new warm winter coat for my son and myself. I am so hopeful for tomorrow, Thank you so very much."

"Thank you so much for helping me with food to feed my children. I work and I do not qualify for food stamps but I am barely able to pay my rent and bills. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate Sister Carmen. You have been a life saver for me."

"I love my new job at a local hospital. I never would have had the courage to apply for that job if it hadn't been for a meeting with one of your Individual and Family Advocates. Candice (Advocate) told me that I am an impressive young woman and that the hospital would be fortunate to have me as an employee. With some new found courage, a boost in self-esteem and a smile on my face, I applied and got the job!"

"My name is Rosa and I feel very proud, happy, excited and motivated to attend Sister Carmen's yoga, Zumba and nutrition classes. I first came to Sister Carmen because I was depressed. I had been going to the hospital every week and they told me that they could find nothing was wrong with me, that I was fine. Then, the hospital gave me the phone number of the bilingual mental health therapist at Sister Carmen. I went to one counseling session and was referred to the exercise classes. I started taking yoga and Zumba right away. The effect was immediate. I began to feel so much better. This week I started the nutrition class, as well. I can't wait to try all the healthy recipes at home. Thank you for providing all the classes. They have changed my life."

Mission

Sister Carmen Community Center's mission is to provide assistance to residents of Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, and Erie, who are in need, without discrimination.

Background Statement

Founded to continue the work of Sister Carmen Ptacnik of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Sister Carmen is the only center providing comprehensive services to low-income residents in our area. Although we are no longer a religious organization, we retained Sister Carmen's name to commemorate her charitable interest in our community. In 1978, SCCC became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Since then, we expanded to two locations, dramatically increased programming, and attained status as a Family Resource Center.
