Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance collaborates with Bureau of Land Management to engage the public through education, outreach, and stewardship for the use and enjoyment of the natural and cultural landscape of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and nearby public lands.

One of SCCA's most important programs is to provide educational field trips for local youth. In 2019, more than 1,500 students from schools in Montezuma County, La Plata County, San Juan County, Dolores County, San Miguel County, Montrose County, Ouray County, Delta County, and statewide including areas in Colorado Springs, Aspen, and Vail visited Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum (CAVM) or Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (CANM).

CANM is known to have the greatest density of archaeological resources of any landscape in this country! While visiting CANM, students immerse themselves in the environment while guided by SCCA's knowledgeable education team. Students will hike to front-country archaeological sites, learn about the natural resources of the monument, and gain a better understanding of how to protect these globally rare but locally abundant sites for the future. On a separate fieldtrip, students will visit Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum (CAVM). CAVM is known to be the premier archaeological museum in this region with interactive exhibits and the archaeological remains of two Ancestral Puebloan homesites accessible for the students to visit. The CANM office of the Bureau of Land Management committed $10,000 to support educational programs like these for 2020. This is almost half of the funding needed to support these education programs in 2020.

With our local BLM as a lead contributor to this program, SCCA is currently seeking donations from individuals like YOU who are interested in investing in our community and youth by supporting these educational programs. The impact of your investment would help to foster our land stewards of tomorrow and protect our public lands for the future. Please help us reach our goal of raising $15,000 for education programs in 2020. Thank you for your support!
