Before Mar’Leno met Alicia Smith, he had lived in several foster homes. Alicia welcomed him as her foster son, and as they got to know each other, she knew she wanted to be his mom.
“I never expected perfection; I simply wanted him to know that he was loved, wanted, and worth fighting for,” Alicia said.
When things got difficult, they had someone to turn to. Eve Powers, their Youth Connections Advocate at Raise the Future, encouraged them and advocated for them as they worked toward adoption.
“Adoption didn’t make me love him any more than I already did; it simply made official what my heart had known for a long time,” Alicia said. “He was already my son.”

Raise the Future, originally known as The Adoption Exchange, has been transforming the lives of foster youth since 1983. Based in Colorado and active across several states, the organization has helped over thousands of children find stable, loving adults who show up for these youth everyday.
Children in foster care often face immense challenges: they are frequently survivors of trauma, older, or part of minority or sibling groups. Without adoption, they risk aging out of the system at 18, leaving them vulnerable to homelessness, poverty, and other hardships.
Permanent adult connections offer these children a chance to thrive, providing them with stability, improved health, and a pathway to a brighter future.
