Background Statement
America’s challenge is no longer simply that people disagree about politics. The deeper problem is that disagreement is increasingly shaping how Americans see one another.
Research shows that large majorities of Republicans and Democrats hold strongly negative feelings toward the opposing party. In 2025, 80% of Americans said Republican and Democratic voters could not agree even on basic facts and majorities in both parties described the other party in overwhelmingly negative terms.
At the same time, Americans are increasingly concerned about politically motivated violence. Recent national research found that people across political affiliations point to polarization, inflammatory rhetoric and an unwillingness to understand people with different views as contributors to that violence. Federal law enforcement has also documented threats and swatting incidents targeting public officials and political appointees.
Better Together USA was created in response to that broader civic fracture.
We believe a healthy country must be able to contain serious disagreement without turning disagreement into hatred. Conservatives, liberals, independents and people who have stepped away from politics should be able to challenge one another, question assumptions and hold strong convictions while still recognizing one another as members of the same community.
Our work creates the infrastructure for that to happen.
Through The American Conversation, Neighbor Tables, civic education, critical thinking and media literacy training, community service and leadership development we bring people back into direct relationship with one another. Participants learn to examine information more carefully, recognize manipulation, understand civic institutions, listen without surrendering their convictions and work alongside people whose beliefs may be very different from their own.
Colorado is our first statewide proof of concept. From there, Better Together USA is building a model that can be documented, measured and eventually replicated in additional states.
Our vision is a country where Americans can disagree deeply without becoming enemies...where people understand why they believe what they believe and where shared citizenship remains stronger than political division.
We do not have to agree to belong to the same community.
