Union Colony Children's Music Academy

A nonprofit organization

We provide the benefits and joys of high quality music and movement education to children in Greeley and Weld county through our partnership with the Weld County District 6 School District's Early Childhood Preschool Program (including children qualifying for Headstart, Colorado Preschool Program, and Preschool Special Education) and through our financial and adaptive scholarship fund. Our scholarship fund provides adaptive classes and scholarships for children with disabilities, teen parents and their babies, and children who would otherwise not be able to participate.

Testimonials

"Our adopted children have significant sensory and special needs. Our music class continues to be the highlight of our week. The encouragement and support could not have come at a better time in our life. We have seen significant improvements in their language skills, behaviors and sensory input. We are so grateful and highly recommend this program."

"My wonderful child was introduced into our home at 7 months, a very sick and traumatized child. As a parent of a few children suffering from traumatic starts, we immediately enrolled him into music and movement classes through Union Colony Children's Music Academy. Music, along with movement encouraging crossing his midline is an important therapy to aid in stress reduction, and helping the brain to start to heal from the areas that were stunted from trauma. It has been our experience, with our developmentally normal functioning children and our challenged children, that this program has been one of the greatest gifts in their learning processes. Music and movement are crucial to all children's early academic lives, especially before reading and math activity. My child continues to need encouragement in controlling his impulse control, and socially interacting in appropriate and kind manner. Experiencing this type of music and movement opportunity within his learning environment has been highly beneficial. He is learning these skills, and repeating these skills daily. He will be successful in his future as a learner."

"The growth and development my children have shown through Union Colony's music classes have exceeded my expectations. The songs and activities help with so much more than music. My children have learned practical things that help me teach and parent, for instance washing hands, brushing teeth, following instructions, stopping something they are doing, cleaning up, transitioning to new tasks, playing with others, exploring, and creative play are just a few to name. I love taking them each week and it is so fun to come home and see how much they've learned, even if they don't show it in class or show it when they were younger (babies). Putting my kids in UCCMA is the best thing I have ever done for their growth and development. I love the teachers and the programs and would highly recommend it to anyone considering."

"UCCMA has a great program. My son has been attending classes for over three years now and started when he was 6 months old. Each class is thoughtfully planned and the variety of classes are tailored to accommodate your child as they grow. Not only are the classes fun, but they continue to teach music, movement, creativity, memorization, and spark activities at home that my son normally wouldn't have thought of."

Mission

UCCMA's mission is to provide an opportunity for all children and families to experience the benefits and joys of music and movement. Music stimulates all areas of development- intellectual, social, emotional, motor, and language. It enhances motor skills and math and reading performance, as well as executive function. By building listening skills, attention span, concentration, dexterity, coordination, and memory, music improves children's overall learning, literacy skills, and self-esteem. Research continues to demonstrate the benefits of early childhood music education. As a non-profit, 501 c3 organization, UCCMA strives to make this opportunity available to the entire community.

Background Statement

Union Colony Children's Music Academy (UCCMA) was founded in 1989 as the first early childhood music and movement program in Northern Colorado, and became a nonprofit in 2001 to better serve our students. Currently, UCCMA offers music and movement classes to over 500 children from birth to young adult and to over 50 adults with developmental disabilities.

Through the years we have been recognized as one of the top 10 Musikgarten programs in the country, and have been awarded the Musikgarten Exemplary Program Certificate yearly since 2004. We received the Group Community Service Award in Services for Children in 2009 and 2016, the Celebrate 6! Award from District 6 in 2016, the Annual Achieve With Us Award from the Arc of Weld County in 2018, and were recognized as a Public Health Champion by Weld County in 2007.

Our current services include multiple movement and music classes per week from September to July and in the summer and include the following:

* Thirty-three classes designed for children and families in age specific and developmentally appropriate class groupings from birth to age twelve, including piano, ukulele, and guitar class instruction.

* Five classes geared specifically for families with children with disabilities and adaptive needs to allow a space for families who wish for an opportunity to network and meet with other families with children with special needs, as well as space for families who wish to participate in a class where they don't have to explain about their child and everyone has understanding.

*Classes that partner with Envision to bring the joys of professional community music making and movement to adults with developmental disabilities.

* Classes with the District 6 Early Childhood Center in the Colorado Preschool Program as well as with the Colorado Preschool Program classrooms at ABC East Childhood Center.

* Partnership and regular outreach classes with the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind, Jefferson High School in Greeley, SEVA, and Best Starts for Babies and Toddlers.

* Summer day camps and classes for children from three to nine years that allow a more in depth as well as holistic approach to music and movement experiences, including partnership with Houston Gardens in Greeley.
