About

Tall Tales Ranch is building an inclusive residential community in Lone Tree, Colorado, where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live with independence, connection, and stability. The future Tall Tales Ranch community will include 28 affordable residential units, a community resource center, an event barn, and a coffee shop designed to create meaningful employment opportunities. While our housing project moves toward construction, we deliver programs that strengthen skills, confidence, and social belonging. These programs give participants meaningful opportunities today while preparing them for the expanded community that will soon take shape on our campus.

Our current programs include:

  • Workforce Development: Tall Tales Coffee Company provides hands-on training and paid employment through our mobile coffee trailer, while our Community Employment Program creates individualized job placements with partners such as Douglas County Libraries, Ent Credit Union, and Project Our Town.

  • Life Skills Program: This program offers practical instruction in cooking, financial readiness, communication, community navigation, and other skills essential to independent living.

  • Young Professional Board: A leadership and advocacy group made up of 50% adults with I/DD, offering opportunities to build public speaking, decision-making, and project-planning skills while contributing to the future of Tall Tales Ranch.

  • Social Enrichment Opportunities: Inclusive activities and events that foster friendship, community engagement, and personal growth, ensuring adults with I/DD have consistent access to meaningful social connection.

Tall Tales Ranch has served the community for more than ten years, growing from a vision shared by families into a movement supported across Colorado. As we prepare to break ground on our residential campus, our programs continue to expand in impact and reach. The community we are building is rooted in belonging, opportunity, and the belief that every adult deserves a place to live fully and independently.

Background Statement

Tall Tales Ranch was founded in 2014 by Pat and Susan Mooney in honor of their son, Ross, whose journey highlighted the profound shortage of meaningful housing and employment opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Colorado. What began as a family’s dream to create a safe, connected, and opportunity-rich future has grown into a decade-long community effort supported by families, partners, donors, and volunteers who believe adults with I/DD deserve more than the limited options currently available.

In its early years, Tall Tales Ranch focused on building relationships, testing program models, and listening to adults with I/DD and their families about what independence truly requires. These conversations shaped the vision for a residential community that integrates stable housing with social connection, skill-building, and pathways to employment. The organization has since expanded its programming, strengthened partnerships across the metro area, and secured 4-acres of land in Lone Tree to bring this vision to life.

Now, with site planning complete and construction approaching, Tall Tales Ranch is entering its next chapter. The future campus will provide a place where adults with I/DD can live, work, and participate fully in community life — a model created not out of theory, but out of the lived experiences and needs of the people it is designed to serve.
