What would you do after hearing the words "You have breast cancer?" Sense of Security is here to help make this difficult period of time a bit more bearable. We provide sustained financial assistance during cancer treatment for Colorado breast cancer patients.

"I cannot begin to express my gratitude for helping me with my rent. It's bad enough to get the news that you have Stage 4 cancer, but then to not know how on earth you can manage the expenses! If not for the kindness and support of Sense of Security I certainly would be homeless." C.S., grantee

"I wish to send many thanks to you and your staff for the kind help you provided to my wife and I. The financial help you gave to us allowed me to spend less time worrying about money, and more time taking care of my wife in the last months of her life. What a tremendous blessing!" Mike, grantee's husband

"Most cancer patients divide their lives into 'before cancer' and 'after cancer.' A new diagnosis of breast cancer always brings disorganizing waves of anxiety and fear. As women struggle to master these emotions, reorganize their lives, and reconfigure their finances, it is wonderful to be able to say, 'Call Sense of Security . . . they really will help'. It is the deepest reassurance I can give a woman newly diagnosed with breast cancer. To know that a sturdy group of people stand ready with open hearts and open pocketbooks to help is to know that you are not alone."
Priscilla Ingebrigtsen, retired LCSW University of Colorado Hospital

We provide a Sense of Security from financial hardship and enhance the quality of life for Colorado breast cancer patients in treatment. Our $500 monthly grants are used by grantees to help with everyday expenses like housing, utilities, transportation, and groceries. These grants allow breast cancer patients to focus on recovery instead of expenses and take care of their families when it is most difficult.

Background Statement

Sense of Security was founded in 2000 by Vicki Tosher and Angela Ricker to provide a community-based resource for breast cancer patients in treatment. Based on the belief that patients in cancer treatment should not suffer undue hardship because of their disease, let alone be forced to abandon the safety of their home or choose between treatment and financial independence.

We have distributed nearly $2,200,000 to more than 2,000 families in 54 Colorado counties since 2000. Grantees have fed their families, paid their rent, and paid their utilities with funds from Sense of Security; we have provided a semblance of normalcy for these families during extraordinarily difficult times through the generosity of donors like you!
