Background Statement

Victimization impacts all areas of an individual's life. The legal issues that stem from victimization are often complex and unexpected. Victims and survivors of violence throughout Colorado have been turning to Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center (RMvlc) to help answer their questions, provide advocacy and support, and for direct legal representation since 2010.

RMvlc is a Colorado non-profit, legal-service organization that provides pro bono legal assistance to crime victims to help them enforce their rights. RMvlc also assists prosecutors and victim service agencies in helping victims protect and enforce their rights. RMvlc was founded upon our Victim Rights Legal Services program where we regularly engaged in VRA enforcement on behalf of crime victims through litigation in criminal proceedings, consultation with service providers or prosecutors on interpretations of the law, and training on legal issues for agencies working within the justice system.

In 2012, RMvlc was awarded a federal demonstration project grant to assess the gaps in legal services crime victims face as a direct result of their victimization. After a comprehensive needs assessment, we learned that crime victims needed access to accurate, accessible, and reliable legal information. As a result, we developed the Legal Information Network of Colorado (LINC). Through LINC we maintain an extensive website that contains information and referrals related to common questions and legal information victims need post-victimization. We host a helpline where victims can access information as well as limited legal advice related to their legal issues. Finally, we train more than 60 victim advocates and allied professionals on advanced legal issue spotting topics. The goal of our training is to elevate the capacity of the field and ensure that crime victims are getting accurate and reliable legal information regardless of who they reach out to in the aftermath of victimization.

In 2019, RMvlc launched its Title IX Legal Services program. This program provides support and direct legal representation to survivors of gender-based violence as they navigate the Title IX process on campus to ensure they are able to fully and safely access their education.

RMvlc continues to expand and grow to meet the legal needs of crime victims in Colorado. Those who use our services frequently share how invaluable our support is and how our legal interventions allow them to focus on their journey of healing and recovery.
