Rural communities are often overlooked but are deserving of access to a great education. Our hands-on approach calls on educators to determine their area of greatest need and how they'd like to receive our support. We consult and match donor funds with these highly impactful projects.

Since 2016, the Nathan Yip Foundation has provided more than $800,000 to rural schools, districts, and teachers to help close the education gap that is increasing between rural schools and those in more metro areas.  This fall alone we provided more than $100,000 to teachers throughout rural Colorado to fund their innovative ideas and programs.  The need is great - we were only able to support fund 1/3 of the requests - with your help on Colorado Gives Day we aim to support more rural Colorado educators and students in 2023.  Click here for an interactive version of the map below showing all of the sites/projects we have supported over the year.

Mission

The Nathan Yip Foundation supports K-12 rural education in Colorado.

Background Statement

The Nathan Yip Foundation was founded in 2002 by Jimmy and Linda Yip, after they lost their only child, Nathan, in an automobile accident in December 2001. Nathan was 19 years old. Growing up, Nathan was very involved with philanthropy and was Vice President of Future Givers at Kent Denver. The organization's mission was to encourage young people to help others through philanthropic efforts.

Nathan traveled the world with his parents. While visiting many remote areas of China, Nathan was overwhelmed by the poverty and lack of educational opportunities. It was during these trips that Nathan and Jimmy spoke of starting a foundation to fund education for impoverished and underserved children worldwide. Nathan recognized his own privilege and knew that by targeting education, he could begin to end the cycle of poverty that exists in so many rural areas. The Yip family made a promise that when Nathan finished college, they would work together to establish this foundation.

After Nathan's passing, Jimmy and Linda Yip dedicated their lives to making Nathan's dream his legacy. It is Jimmy and Linda's hope that the Nathan Yip Foundation will build upon Nathan's legacy and bring positive energy and fulfillment from their most tragic loss.

Over more than two decades, the NYF has provided direct support through its many education-focused programs including building schools, training teachers, providing scholarship funds, books and school supplies, and funding various capital projects addressing students' basic needs. The foundation has historically funded educational projects worldwide.

However, since 2016 the foundation has shifted focus to support rural education in Colorado. All funds raised support schools, students and teachers in rural Colorado schools (more than 140 of the 170+ districts in Colorado are considered rural.) Funds are distributed through grants to both teachers and districts based on their needs and their requests.
