Lifeart Dance Ensemble

A nonprofit organization

Life/Art strives to make dance more accessible to everyone: by bringing dance to those who may have mobility and cost barriers, by bringing dance to unexpected places, and by bringing the larger Colorado dance scene together with events that serve to help emerging artists in the field.

Mission

Life/Art Dance Ensemble's mission is to create and provide professional dance and music to Denver Metro communities through artistic collaboration, positive outreach, and education.

Background Statement

Life/Art Dance Ensemble (Life/Art) was created in 2009, in part, to provide low-income older adults along the Front Range with the opportunity to experience live professional dance performances. Over the past decade, Life/Art has brought 112 entertaining, uplifting, and educational performances to subsidized housing facilities for older adults, reaching over 2500 people. This outreach program, "Cultural Experiences for Older Adults," is an important part of Life/Art's work. In 2021, we added inclusive dance classes to these offerings.

The creation of unique contemporary dance performances and the collaboration with other artists is another key part of Life/Art's work. Since 2009, Life/Art has worked with visual artists, musicians, composers, poets, filmmakers, and linguists to create unique productions for both the stage and site-specific venues. In addition to self-produced performances, Life/Art has worked with many other organizations and artists to bring dance to the community in unexpected and unusual ways. Examples include activating a diorama at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science's Dia Del NiƱo event, adding live dance to a dance film presented by Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema, and incorporating dance into Stratus Chamber Orchestra's immersive concerts. In 2015, Life/Art created a dance film festival, entitled "Life in Motion: A Colorado Dance Film Festival," AND a cost-sharing show called "Convergence." Both events have allowed Life/Art to fill a gap in the local dance scene while functioning as a vehicle through which artists in the community are able to show their work. In 2020, Life/Art moved to a virtual platform for all performance but was able to return to in-person performing in 2021 by limiting indoor audiences and adding both an outdoor and virtual option for each production. Most recently, Life/Art has acquired a resident string quartet: the New Dawn String Quartet to join us on our journey toward performing to 100% live or new music.
