Overall description: The Lakewood Symphony is a symphony orchestra that presents six concerts throughout a nine-month season. In our 2023-24 season, these comprise five subscription season concerts (including a pops concert, three very varied programs [including major soloists] from the vast orchestral literature), and a family concert. During this season we will also conduct our annual Young Artists Concerto Competition.
Organization's history: Over the last 40+ years the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has evolved to become an organization dedicated to meeting the need of the greater Lakewood community for its own symphonic orchestra. The orchestra was founded in 1977 as the Rocky Mountain Symphony to provide a place for local musicians to perform, principally for friends and family members. In concert with this initial mission the orchestra played for years in churches throughout the area and made very little or no effort to attract larger audiences or, crucially, to improve the quality of its offerings by utilizing higher skilled musicians. As the emphasis was on the musicians' opportunities to play, rather than their skills levels, there were no standards regarding instrumental competency. Some years ago we changed our name to the Lakewood Symphony Orchestra to reflect a new and much wider focus on providing live orchestral music to the entire Lakewood community. The name change was very propitious for us, because soon afterward the City of Lakewood opened its very first performing arts center (the Lakewood Cultural Center (LCC)), a national-class, intimate performing arts facility). We moved our performances permanently (from a local church) to the LCC in October of 2003, an action that was pivotal in our transformation from a friends-and-family-oriented orchestra to a full-fledged community orchestra dedicated to meeting the needs of our community for high quality, live orchestral music. Shortly thereafter we changed our mission to: "to present the highest quality orchestral performances to our greater Lakewood community". We have been steadily and consistently growing both in the quality of our offerings and in our community's awareness of our presence.
The orchestra continues its progress and development. We have established a presence in the Lakewood Cultural Center, where many other very high-quality-to-world-class artists and groups perform. Our highly skilled musicians are taken seriously by a wide audience. We are recognized as Lakewood's outstanding symphony orchestra.
