KAFM is a member-supported, volunteer-oriented community radio station dedicated to excellence and diversity in programming. KAFM fills a vital role in the Grand Valley of Western Colorado as an accessible forum for the presentation of music, arts, culture, information by and for the local community.
In 1992, a group of dedicated civic-minded Grand Valley residents initiated the creation of a locally owned and operated community radio station. This action came about after the license of the existing public radio station (KPRN) was sold to Colorado Public Radio in Denver, leaving Grand Junction with no locally-originated programming. After seven years of planning, fund-raising and acquiring the required licensing and equipment, KAFM began broadcasting in March, 1999.
From 1999 to 2010, KAFM broadcast at its original 16-watt signal. In 2010, the Federal Communications Commission approved an increased signal strength of 300 watts. KAFM conducted a successful capital campaign that year to raise $116,000 for transmitter equipment and broadcast booth upgrades. The increased signal has allowed KAFM to reach a wider audience.
The onsite "Radio Room" was later created to provide a venue for concerts, art exhibits and other special events. The Radio Room has become a gathering place for the community to come together for a variety of cultural and learning events.
