I had the most wonderful and life changing experience at the ICAA Winter Intensive 2022. I cannot thank you and the ICAA RM Board enough for the scholarship and making it possible for me to attend. They do not call it an intensive for nothing, each day was jam packed with information. The first few days were spent drawing the orders, and while I had already drawn them in class at CU Denver, it is invaluable to re draw them over and over again. Each time I became more comfortable with it and the proportions are becoming second nature. Rachel Fletcher came in and gave the most amazing lecture on the theory of proportion and the golden section. She is a genius and attempted to impart 40 years worth of knowledge upon us in 4 hours, it was fascinating.

We were able to go on quite a few walking tours around midtown, even just the block that the ICAA sits on has so many amazing buildings to study. One of my favorites was the NYC public library. We did field drawing at the Merchants House Museum in NoHO and it felt like stepping back in time. We were lucky to get the opportunity to tour the University Club, which provided the perfect inspiration for our parti back at the studio.

The design studio was the most fun part of the intensive. We only had one day to create a few partis, and then the esquisse. With the help of the TAs, the design work did not feel intimidating. The best day was the full day we had to draw our final drawing. I have attached my final drawing in this email. We were able to present our drawings the next morning and it was so fun to see everyone’s work and how far we had come in such a short amount of time. Even with the same design prompt, every pavilion was so different. There is so much richness in the classical language to explore.

Completing the intensive was my last step towards the certificate. I am very pleased to say that I have received the certificate in classical architecture! I am currently working for a boutique firm in Telluride CO, on high end residential. There is so much that can be taken from the classical language and applied to the mountain vernacular. I am so excited and grateful to begin my career with this knowledge under my belt. Again, thank you thank you for the scholarship and the support as I pursued the certificate. I am so grateful to be apart of the ICAA Rocky Mountain Chapter.

The ICAA Winter Intensive in New York City was a phenomenal experience that was the grand finale of my collegiate architectural journey. First and foremost, I must thank the ICAA Rocky Mountain Chapter for granting me a scholarship to attend. The trip was so much more wonderful with their support. I had good times and good laughs with Isabella and Sadie, both inspire me in different ways, and I cherish the time I had with them.

It surely was an intense ten days; however, it was worthwhile the whole way through. I have become such a Classical nerd, and this program gave me the outlet to immerse myself and get a deeper understanding. Being a student in New York was exhilarating, and I fell in love with the city all over again. Walking around and seeing all the different applications, implementations, and inventions of the Classical Language was a highlight of the trip. I was proud that I was beginning to pick up classical vocabulary and grammar from my studies and the ICAA video courses and use it while sightseeing. The ICAA headquarters was a fun building to walk to every morning, explore, and admire their artifacts. The staff and TAs that taught and lectured us were all great people. I enjoyed being around like-minded students and practitioners while we drew the Orders to specific detail and more. The ink wash was so calming and pleasurable to do, it was nice having time to slow down and execute that rendering. The Esquisse was challenging, however, I am proud of what I accomplished, and it looks great in my portfolio. I could not be happier with what came from that experience.

The past year studying Classical design brought such joy and opportunity. I am grateful to the ICAA and Rocky Mountain Chapter for their support throughout the process. At the CU Denver career fair, I sought out Classical firms solely to network. There was only one, and although the location was far, I felt the need to converse with them anyway. Fast forward to now, I am about to accept a fantastic offer from Curtis & Windham Architects and I am planning a move to Houston, where I will continue studying the Classical notion that I love.

Background Statement

With the Generous Support of donors like you we've been able to accomplish the following achievements:

- In 2009 we became a chartered National ICAA chapter with over 100 members representing 5 States in the Rocky Mountain Region.

- Maintained 4 or more educational events per year.

- Awarded 2 Student Scholarships annually.

- Held & maintained a Biannual Award Program (Newman and Jacques Benedict) celebrating & recognizing today's contemporary architects, interior designers, builders, craftsmen, artisans, students and patrons whose work displays the same expression of legacy, creativity and excellence in the classical tradition.

- Created columns & coffee, a tour program focusing on beautiful classical work in the region.

- Established a working partnership with the University of Colorado at Denver, College of Architecture + Planning, to further advance the exposure of students to the classical tradition through their classical certificate program which is the only classical certificate program at a public university in the country.

- Created the RMC Education Fund which focuses on increasing opportunities for students and emerging professionals to advance their knowledge of the classical tradition in architecture, urbanism, and the allied arts. educational opportunities include: ICAA workshops, intensives, summer studios, drawing tours and more.

- Established the ICAA RMC Emerging Professionals Group, tailored to those within the first 5 years of their career, regardless of age, or those emerging into new areas of their career. Our new EP Group is focused on creating a community to further expose individuals to the practice and appreciation of the classical tradition in architecture and the allied arts in our region. Through social events, lectures, studio tours and more we will create opportunities for emerging professionals to grow through continuing education and professional development within the ICAA network.

- Established a weekly sketching program, Sketching Benedict Saturday: An Exploration of Jacques Benedict's Works. Jacques Benedict (1879-1947), the esteemed early 20th century Denver architect, graduate of the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts in Paris, produced nearly 80 beaux arts style buildings in the Rocky Mountain region. The classical proportions, restrained ornamentation and unmatched beauty of Benedict's designs continue to serve as an enduring source of delight and inspiration

- Hosted 2023 Regional Intensive with 25 participants, the largest attendeance the ICAA has ever had. The Intensive is the ICAA's longest running program. It is an eight-day immersion in the core curriculum. The program is designed for professionals and students with limited time, who seek a methodical introduction to the language of classical architecture. Participants learn how to draw, identify, render, and compose with the classical elements to form an understanding of the basic tenets on which the classical tradition is founded. Topics include: the classical elements and composition, proportion, architectural representation through drawing and rendering, the study of precedent, and the literature of classical architecture. The week culminates in a studio project in which students use the classical canon in the design of a small building. Students are guided through a design process rooted in the Beaux-Arts system in which an initial parti is developed during an esquisse and a charrette into a finished design proposal. The program concludes with a review by an esteemed panel of architects.
