Groundwork Denver

A nonprofit organization

Groundwork Denver is about community action with environmental results.

Our mission is to partner with youth and community to build a healthy, equitable, and sustainable environment. We are doers, not talkers. We plant trees, we clean up rivers, we build trails and sidewalks, we weatherize homes, we grow food, and we do all this through the leadership of community youth who develop green job skills along the way. This has been our work for 20 years now. Your support this Colorado Gives Day will help us build upon 20 years of action towards an environmentally just Denver.

All gifts made now through Colorado Gives Day are being matched dollar-for-dollar by another supporter.

Give today to DOUBLE your impact!

Jovani, Green Team Youth & Water Program Assistant
"My community is my peers, my coworkers and my classmates as well as the small town of Sheridan, Colorado. [Groundwork Denver's programming] is important to us because we go out into the community and actually make a change.  It helps a lot of kids out there to interact with the environment because there aren't parks close to them.  We pick up trash, help at food banks, and we even participated in an Earth Day tree planting where we planted over 40 trees in our neighborhood. It's also important for us all as a community to take a stand and show what we believe in and show that we care about the environment around us.  If anything is a part of our ecosystem, we need to take care of what we have and what we are a part of otherwise it's just going to go away some day."

Gabe, Program Director, Green Infrastructure Training
"As housing prices have increased, many BIPOC community members get pushed out of the downtown areas to neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city. These areas tend to be presently or formerly industrialized, with significant environmental challenges like polluted land and waterways, poor air quality, extreme heat, and flooding. We build teams in these areas to work in their communities; that way, GRIT participants tackle environmental injustices they experience first-hand."

Sadot, Green Team member
"Without Groundwork Denver I cannot imagine how my life would have turned out. It has transformed me and my future allowing me to become a compassionate person and active leader. Groundwork Denver has evolved from a job to a stepping stone in my life."

Loyola, Church Leader
"The people you served are very humble people who have worked hard all of their lives and have been leaders in their neighborhoods. We all know that nothing would have been done to help these people if your staff had not offered your services."

Margaret, President Globeville Civic Association #1
"We appreciate having Groundwork Denver to partner with in our neighborhood and Groundwork Denver bringing so many needed resources to our community, which has been an overdue issue for our neighborhood for a very long time."

KC, contributes home-grown produce to Groundwork Denver's Fresh Food Connect program
"We want to support biodiversity and pollinators. We love that our garden starts with a good neighbor, is made possible through beautiful plants from a nonprofit, and benefits Fresh Food Connect’s innovative food share program. We believe our group effort of growing and sharing food is one of the most beautiful ways to participate in community."

We partner with youth and community to build a healthy, equitable, and sustainable environment.

For two decasdes years, we've driven community action towards environmental results right here in metro Denver.

Background Statement

Most of us believe that everyone has a right to a healthy and safe environment, regardless of how much money we make or the color of our skin.

More than two decades ago, Groundwork Denver launched with the purposed of responding to environmental injustices in the metro Denver community. We exist to engage residents in civic planning processes and to implement tangible neighborhood-based and youth-led projects that improve the urban environment while developing environmental leaders.

Our goals are:

To build bridges between residents, businesses and government to accomplish positive environmental change.

To support the growth and development of environmental and community leaders from the neighborhoods where we work through youth employment, internships and community-based jobs.

To promote the inclusion of the diversity of people in our communities in decision-making and in action.

To ensure equal access to a clean and healthy environment for everyone, regardless of where they live, their economic status or their race or ethnicity.
