"Thank you for existing and providing me with avenues to information. The thought of researching myself is daunting."

"A truly wonderful and needed service for the community. The volunteer I spoke with was terrific...a great listener, thorough and calming in her demeanor."

"Thank you so much for your calm professionalism and for responding so quickly and thoroughly."

"The Grillo Center continues to be a reliable and dependable resource of health information for me. Over the past three years I have utilized your services extensively. Thank you to everyone involved with such a wonderful community service."

"I am not confident in my own Internet searching abilities, especially in locating accurate, reliable medical sites. The information you helped with arrived promptly and was most helpful. It gives me questions to ask and discussion points for my medical provider visits. Thank you!!!"

"Thank you so much for your kindness, work, understanding, search and support."

"This is a great service that you provide to the community. It used to be that we had to rely on only doctors to let us know about medical research. Often times, because doctors are busy, they miss or don't ell the patient something that would be helpful in coping with a new disease or condition. This research will assist me in asking questions when I go to the doctor regarding tests that I may need to diagnose complications which I am already noticing with my newly diagnosed Celiac Sprue disease."

"Very helpful-volunteer took the necessary time to locate many articles on my research question and was especially helpful in extracting the most relevant from a vast amount of material."

"Excellent, kind and caring support...I felt comfortable and relaxed. I will not hesitate to use this information resource center again."

Background Statement

While cancer, stroke, heart and respiratory diseases are common causes of death in this country, tens of thousands of people live with these conditions in their early-to-advanced stages. With greater numbers of the population overall, the prevalence of individuals and families who will have to cope with social and financial burdens related to disease management will rise. Diseases and chronic ill health also affect quality of life, contributing to declines in functioning. Poor health can have a negative influence on self-sufficiency and lead to costs for in-home and institutional care.

Scientific research shows that personal health behaviors, or self-care as it's referred to in the field, play a major role in the prevention of premature morbidity and mortality related to many chronic health problems. One of the most important breakthroughs in improving health is the discovery that avoidable morbidity and premature mortality can be prevented by taking simple actions that are within the grasp of most adults. By adopting recommended health behaviors, people can preserve their health and postpone and reduce the effects of chronic diseases.

At the core of the Grillo Health Information Center, is the belief that individuals can and should take charge of their own health and well-being, and that most have the power within themselves to do so.

Studies by the National Institute of Health show that low health literacy has a real financial cost to health care delivery systems. Poor health literacy is linked to higher rates of chronic illness, hospitalizations, and expensive emergency services. It affects everyone, and comes at a high price not only for health and well-being, but for the health care system in general. Low health literacy is estimated to cost between $106 and $234 billion annually.

The Grillo Health Information Center was founded to meet individual and family needs when faced with a health issue. Our services empower others to make informed decisions and lessen an over-reliance on the health care system, thereby reducing unnecessary health care costs. The origin of this organization began when Virgil Grillo, a professor at the Unviersity of Colorado, was diagnosed with cancer and could not find reliable health information or alternative treatment options. The Grillo Center has evolved over the last 12 years to serve any health related need by providing evidenced-based research for traditional or complementary approaches to heatlh care. Our volunteers are trained to provide confidential, nurturing services to anyone in need, and to encourage self-sufficiency and health literacy among the population.

The Grillo Health Information Center believes it is vital to promote health information literacy and self-sufficiency among the population to sustain and improve health and well-being. As more individuals and families develop confidence in their own ability to access health care information and in their own health management practices, they will personally experience improved health and well-being. We have learned that those who make the most significant contributions to others are those who have been through similar challenges and who have experienced positive outcomes. Many of our volunteers are such individuals.
