Background Statement
Current Protections from Secondhand Smoke Are at Risk
The Colorado legislature recently passed House Bill 19-1230, a law that allows local communities to choose whether to "Opt In" and allow marijuana smoking and/or vaping in any type of licensed establishment.
Allowing marijuana smoking and/or vaping in public places undermines the laws that have protected you from exposure to secondhand smoke in indoor spaces.
No ventilation system can filter all the toxic chemicals emitted in secondhand smoke from marijuana and vaping devices, some of which are the same cancer-causing compounds that cause disease and death from tobacco smoke.
GASP Continues to Fight for Your Right to Breathe Smoke-Free Air
1. Fighting to Protect Our Smoke-Free Laws
GASP opposes any efforts to weaken laws that endanger public health through exposure to secondhand smoke and vaping emissions. We continue to fight to keep the public-health protections provided by the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act strong, and oppose efforts to bring smoking back indoors after years of smoke-free policies.
2. Implementing and Improving Smoke-Free
Policies in Communities
GASP provides resources to individuals and businesses working to increase protections from secondhand smoke and offers guidance to residents exposed to secondhand smoke in their apartments or condominiums. We also help housing providers implement smoke-free policies.
3. Educating the Public about Secondhand Smoke
GASP works to educate the public about the dangers of secondhand smoke by providing information and resources to resolve the drifting of secondhand smoke into a home or business.
More than 80% of donations to GASP are used to buy media time for informative and hard¬-hitting media campaigns through social media and news channels, along with radio and print campaigns to reach the public.
