Background Statement
The Group to Alleviate Smoking Pollution focuses on protecting the public from exposure to secondhand smoke of any kind. Our current programs focus on:
Education and Media Impact
• GASP launched a compelling video media campaign produced by KUSA TV featuring the resources and helpful tips available at mysmokefreehousing.org. In October the campaign reached more than 261,000 Colorado households with the help of public donations.
• GASP continues to provide valuable information about the dangers of secondhand smoke at gaspforair.org and about secondhand marijuana smoke or vape at smokeissmoke.com.
Protecting Residents from Secondhand Smoke
• 14,000+ Colorado apartments and condos have adopted smoke-free policies, and GASP continues to provide a way to find smoke-free housing in Colorado at mysmokefreehousing.com.
• Help for Residents: GASP is an important way for individuals struggling with secondhand smoke (SHS) drifting into their homes to find helpful tips and resources through mysmokefreehousng.org. GASP provides referrals to health or legal agencies for further assistance.
Strategic Outreach With the Housing Industry
• GASP continues providing resources to housing providers about the benefits of smoke-free policies at mysmokefreehousing.org.
• GASP’s partnership with the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) has been the key to gaining respect in the housing. Through our membership with the Colorado Apartment Association our networking with people in the housing industry has improved. Together, we participate in the association’s annual trade show attended by more than a thousand housing providers and associations.
• GASP’s latest quarterly smoke-free housing newsletter provided tips on how to enforce smoke-free policies reaching more than 2,500 housing providers and associations.
• GASP also provides a free listing of smoke-free apartments and condos at mysmokefreehousing.com which helps encourage more housing providers to adopt smoke-free policies, ensuring healthier living environments for countless residents.
Supporting Efforts to Keep Young People from Lifetime of Tobacco Addiction.
• GASP endorsed and supported the Denver Flavor Ban that was supported by more than 70% of Denver voters. Four out of five kids who try tobacco started with a flavored product. Candy-flavored tobacco products are used by the tobacco industry to attract kids to their dangerous products and then addict them to nicotine for life
• GASP informed more than 4,400 members, supporters, and people in the housing industry about the measure through e-mails and urged Denver residents to support the measure with a Yes vote.
The clean air protections and essential educational outreach detailed above are only possible because of public donations to fund the expansion of our secondhand smoke education campaigns and online resources. Tax-deductible donations to GASP are a direct investment in cleaner air and better health outcomes for Colorado residents facing secondhand smoke exposure.
From now through Colorado Gives Day, Tuesday, December 9, 2025 every donation you make to GASP is automatically boosted to help expand the campaign’s reach, allowing us to touch more lives and promote a smoke-free lifestyle.
• Incentive Fund: Your contribution earns a proportional share of the $1 Million+ Colorado Gives Day Incentive Fund, increasing the total value of your gift.
• Monthly Match: Become a sustaining supporter! New monthly recurring donations are eligible for an up to $100 match during this campaign.
