Background Statement
Founded in 2013 as a pilot program at Valley Settlement preschool in Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley, FocusedKids was created to serve children from immigrant, Spanish-speaking families facing poverty and isolation. What began as a single-school initiative to improve school readiness has grown into a comprehensive program serving nearly 3,000 youth, parents, and teachers annually across rural Western Slope communities like Rifle, Glenwood Springs, and Carbondale.
Today, we remain committed to our founding mission: equipping underserved children with brain-based skills that last a lifetime. Working primarily with Latino families (60-75% of those we serve) living at or below 260% of the federal poverty level, FocusedKids fills a critical gap where accessible mental health resources are scarce.
Our neuroscience-backed program teaches children (ages 0-11) how their brains work and provides practical self-regulation techniques to manage emotions, build resilience, and improve focus. We deliver impact through classroom lessons in Pre-K through middle school, teacher training, and bilingual parent coaching and family events.
The results are measurable: Teachers report reduced classroom stress, and children demonstrate better focus than peers. By reaching children during the most critical developmental window, we're building neurological foundations that improve academic performance, relationships, and mental health for decades to come.
When you invest in FocusedKids, you're not funding a program—you're changing how children's brains develop in communities that need it most.
