Alyssa's Story

When Alyssa discovered she was pregnant, she was gripped by fear and uncertainty, leaving her unsure of what to do next. However, her path took a hopeful turn when she discovered Florence Crittenton Services, a non-profit and high school in Denver designed for teen moms just like her.

After enrolling at Florence Crittenton High School, Alyssa found herself surrounded by teachers, classmates, and staff who understood the unique challenges she faced juggling motherhood and her studies. She felt a sense of belonging she hadn’t known before.

This program didn’t just boost her confidence; it showed her she’s more than just a label. Through the support she found, Alyssa transformed from being embarrassed about being a “teen mom” to owning her identity. Alyssa remarks that "I feel like I can get along with more people now. I feel like I’m able to talk to people just because I know there’s no reason to be judged.”

Florence Crittenton gave her a space with comprehensive wraparound support to navigate both her teen years and motherhood together. Alyssa graduated with the Class of 2023 in May and is studying Criminal Justice at the Community College of Aurora.

At FloCrit, teen moms like Alyssa access resources to overcome obstacles that stand in the way of their success. This support lets them focus on creating the future they want for their families.Alyssa, Class of 2023, and her daughter, Eliana

Testimonials

"Florence Crittenton Services provided me with all the necessary tools to continue my education. Without the ECE Center, counseling, health center, and support network, I would not be able to finish high school, and especially advance into college courses. The ECE Center educated and taught my child the correct material for his age. I saw him meeting milestones significantly earlier than normal."

- Julia, Valedictorian, Class of 2018

"I wouldn't have finished high school if I didn't come to Florence Crittenton...even at my regular high school, I never thought about going to college...Florence Crittenton has opened so many opportunities for me...with so many doors open now, I'm thinking 'Why not? I should do it.'"

-Alison, Class of 2023

“Here at FloCrit you teach us to believe in ourselves. You tell us we can do it and we will. You don´t get that from the outside world.”

-Danessa, Class of 2023

"I remember my first day at FloCrit, it just felt so comforting and it felt like home, like I could just talk to anybody about anything and they would understand. They were just really supportive, they really want one thing: they want us to succeed."

-Myra, Class of 2022

"It was different at Florence Crittenton because you're around people that are going through the same thing you are, the struggles that you go through."

-Araceli, Class of 1990

"Florence Crittenton helps me feel secure. I'm beginning to understand how relationships with certain people in my life have impacted me thanks to the peer group I participate in and therapy on campus. I know now that I can be more than just a good mother. I see myself as a good student, friend, partner, and professional. I am an important woman, and FloCrit has always seen that in me."

-Janessa, Class of 2019
