Background Statement
Emily Griffith Foundation (EGF) carries on the legacy and vision of Emily Griffith, a teacher and a pioneer for adult education who, in 1916, opened the first public career and technical college in the country in downtown Denver-the Opportunity School, now Emily Griffith Technical College (EGTC). Ms. Griffith believed that every person, regardless of age, race, gender, or background has the right to an education and dedicated her life's work to removing barriers that stood between students and their success. She also believed that education is the key to breaking generational cycles of poverty. More than 100 years later, these beliefs remain core values for both EGF and EGTC.
EGF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization started in 1991 after Denver Public Schools (DPS) drastically reduced adult education funding, and stopped subsidizing tuition for EGTC students. EGF was established to provide scholarships and secure other financial support and partnerships so that EGTC students can graduate without student loan debt. In its nearly 30 years of existence, EGF has stayed true to its mission of supporting EGTC's programs and students.
EGTC's mission and vision go hand-in-hand: the mission of EGTC is to prepare students for today's workforce and tomorrow's opportunities, while its vision is to be Colorado's leader in student success, instructional excellence, industry partnerships, and community engagement.
For the last century--through the 1918 Spanish Flu, two World Wars, and The Great Depression--EGTC has responded quickly to labor shortages and community needs while offering accessible and affordable training. Throughout its history, EGTC has added and eliminated programs based on local workforce needs and feedback from students, industry partnerships, and advisory boards, while consistently providing people with opportunities to enter new careers.
EGTC is the postsecondary arm of the DPS system and shares resources with the district. Additionally, EGTC is one of three Area Technical Colleges (ATCs) in Colorado, and as such is overseen by the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) office. The institution is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE).
