Testimonials

"For me, personally, one of the big things is that our government seemingly started to lose control of our public lands through lack of staffing and lack of funding, and there was a huge gap in stewardship. CBMBA has stepped into that gap. It went from being a fun-loving bike club to being an advocate for our public lands. We donate to CBMBA because, especially me as a mountain guide, we were seeing incredibly gross impacts on the land from overuse and abuse by people, and our federal agents couldn't handle it, and CBMBA stepped up to manage it with the Crested Butte Conservation Corps. I've lived here over 30 years and given up my country to live here, and it broke my heart to see how this place was being treated. CBMBA became a real steward of our public lands." - Ian

"As an organization that benefits so many, CBMBA has the amazing ability to bring so many members of our community together. Be it a fundraiser, trail workday, fun ride, you name it…everyone just LOVES CBMBA and wants to be a part of whatever they have going on. CBMBA's strong commitment and endless passion for our trails is evident in the many projects they have and continue to accomplish." - Amy

"CBMBA is the heart and soul of mountain biking in Crested Butte - we wouldn't have the access to the most beautiful trails on the planet without their hard work and dedication!" - Katie

"The best terrain cared for by the best people. Keepin' it real and single!" - Michael

"CBMBA is our FAVORITE Non-Profit in Gunnison, County. We have donated to over 30 different non-profits in the valley since moving here in 2012. CBMBA continued to exceed our expectations and has become our main focus point. When we donate our hard earned income to CBMBA we know they are going to make the largest impact possible. They are extremely thankful, well organized and, well led. CBMBA is leading ALL types of backcountry users to a better backcountry. CBMBA is uniting mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, ranchers, dirt bikers, e bikers. It is hands down impressive. No job is too small, too big or too gross for this organization. Parking cars at trailheads, no problem, pickup and disposing of human waste properly, no big deal. These people are the real deal, please consider them worthy of your hard earned dollars. They will wow you, guaranteed." - Ryan, Cassia, & Adelaide

Mission

CBMBA's Mission is to build, maintain, and advocate for sustainable trails and to conserve the landscape of Crested Butte and beyond.

Background Statement

The Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association was founded by a group of riders and volunteers in 1983. Since then, we have grown into a full-fledged nonprofit that works with our partners to build and maintain over 450 miles of singletrack trail around Crested Butte. We are not affiliated with any other bike clubs or trails organizations, so all of our funds go right back into caring for our own backyard. We fulfill our mission by hosting community events and trail work days that galvanize hundreds of volunteers, who put in over 1500 hours of service every summer. We work closely with our partners, such as the US Forest Service, Gunnison County, the towns of Crested Butte and Mount Crested Butte, and the CB Land Trust. We advocate for sustainable, responsible trails and trail use. We run a website that is a hub of trail information for locals and visitors to the upper Gunnison Valley, featuring maps, recommended rides, and trail conditions reports. In 2017 CBMBA founded a summer trail and stewardship crew, the Crested Butte Conservation Corps (CBCC), to help manage the impacts of increased visitors to our Valley. They work on trails of all kinds, from motorized trails to wilderness and everything in between. In addition to trail work, the CBCC cleans up trash and human waste from the backcountry, educates users at trailheads, and encourages an ethos of respect throughout all user groups in the Valley. Since its inception, the CBCC has cleared 1,715 downed trees blocking trails and access roads, completed maintenance projects on 354 miles of trails, removed 4,694 pounds of trash from public lands, cleaned 1,466 campsites, and conversed with 6,329 trail users about proper trail etiquette. Through our work, CBMBA strives to balance recreation with conservation, minimizing the environmental impacts of trails in whatever ways are possible. We believe that recreation engenders authentic connections to the environment and that trail-based recreation and volunteer service can be a tool for environmental awareness. Through our work on trails we seek to build community, educate users, steward the environment, conserve the landscape, and create a beautiful, sustainable amenity in our backyard for all to enjoy!
