Since 1992, Citizens Project has worked with and within the community to educate and empower people in the Pikes Peak region to embrace all members of our community, regardless of race, economic status, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, or physical or mental ability. Through our programs and outreach, we promote equity in our public spaces and challenge all community members to uphold this value.

We believe that vibrant democracy can only exist when voters are informed, have access to elected leaders, and participate in shaping public policy. We pursue this ideal by hosting educational forums, publishing voter guides, and working collaboratively with the community to promote equitable and just public policy. We envision a vibrant democracy for the Pikes Peak community in which individual rights are protected, differences are respected, and people fully participate in civic and community life.

Testimonials

"Citizens Project's voice helps to balance our community. It helps to give hope to individuals who otherwise may not have hope. And it also helps us a community to look at all sides of issues, which makes us better as a community, as we struggle with some of these issues." - Jan Martin, Former Colorado Springs City Council Member

"For me, Citizens Project is a voice for people who have no voice, or people who think they have no voice. It will speak for you. It will teach you to speak for yourself. It will teach you how to teach others to speak for themselves and stand up for what's right." - Greg V., Citizens Project supporter

"For the last 25 years Citizens Project has helped people in the margins of society get their voices heard and rights respected. Whether training educators about the legalities of separation of church and state in public schools, standing against proposed resolutions that would undercut diversity, or providing nonpartisan information through voter guides, I know that Citizens Project is a vital part of what makes Colorado Springs a place where equality and diversity are welcomed and celebrated. " Lisa K., Citizens Project supporter

"I have committed myself to learning as much as I can about the issues and the candidates before entering the voting booth. I support Citizens Project because it provides the information I need to make an informed decision - nonpartisan voter guides focused on issues of equality, diversity, and separation of church and state. Thanks to Citizens Project, I am now an informed voter." -Davis, Citizens Project supporter

"From informative, non-partisan voter guides to the Citizen's Religious Freedom Institute to issue advocacy, we are proud to be part of the Citizens Project family - standing together for an informed citizenry, equality, and diversity as core values for Colorado Springs! Citizens Project was our beacon in those dark times and is our ally in hope and inclusion, a strong voice that we are proud to support. Citizens Project helped make Colorado Springs our home." Gail and Craig, Citizens Project supporters

Mission

Citizens Project is a fearless, bold advocate and an engaging voice that empowers and challenges our entire community to embrace equity, inclusion, and justice.

Background Statement

Citizens Project formed in 1992 to counter the growing influence of extremists in the Pikes Peak region, primarily in public schools. The organization set out to provide a counter-voice to this influence by promoting pluralism, religious liberties and the separation of church and state.

Soon after its inception, Citizens Project took a strong stand against Amendment 2, an anti-gay ballot initiative, and experienced a ground swell of support from those who found a voice in the organization.

Since then, Citizens Project has pursued a two-pronged strategy: on the one hand exposing extremism, while on the other promoting inclusion and respect for diversity. For example, we have worked to expose religious exclusion in public schools and develop a dialogue program to promote understanding among people with differing views.

Today, Citizens Project is a volunteer-driven organization with a small professional staff and over a thousand donors and activists. In this community, we are proud to be advocates of equity, diversity and pluralism.
