YPF is dedicated to engaging youth in philanthropy by creating opportunities for children and their families to give back to their communities. Our mission is to give kids the power to change our world through philanthropy and volunteerism. We believe that philanthropy is anything a person does to make the world a better place, and we base our programming on a simple philosophy: if we give kids the opportunity to make a difference now, they will continue to do so for the rest of their lives.
Denison Montessori has a number of students living in poverty, some of whom have served on the Penny Harvest grant-making committee for the school. While the program was valuable for all children, it was especially heartening to see the recognition in these students that they were more than 'disadvantaged;' they had just as much to contribute as everyone else. --Penny Harvest Coach
The Young Philanthropists Foundation (YPF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging youth in philanthropy by creating opportunities for children and their families to give back to their communities. Our mission is to give kids the power to change our world through philanthropy and volunteerism. We believe that philanthropy is anything a person does to make the world a better place, and we base our programming on a simple philosophy: if we give kids the opportunity to make a difference now, they will continue to do so for the rest of their lives.
Alexis Owen founded the Young Philanthropists Foundation in 2003 in response to the need to educate young people about their value as community trustees. In order to develop a community-based strategy appropriate for Colorado, Alexis began researching youth philanthropy initiatives across the country and discovered Common Cents, a New York City-based organization highly regarded for its well-established Penny Harvest program.
Since its inception 21 years ago, the Penny Harvest has granted more than $8.1 million and is now the largest youth philanthropy program in the country, operating in more than 900 schools nationwide and reaching one-half million students annually. YPF was selected by Common Cents in April 2007 to implement the Penny Harvest program in Colorado. We are currently in 60 schools across the Front Range with a goal of increasing to 100 schools in the next five years, and taking the program statewide in the next ten years.
We are currently a small organization, with one full time and one part time staff members.
