The Aspen Effect

Healing Begins with a Touch, a Nuzzle—and You

At The Aspen Effect, we believe every young person deserves to feel strong, supported, and connected.

If you’ve ever seen an aspen grove, you know its beauty above ground is only possible because
of the unseen root system below—interconnected, resilient, and thriving.

That’s what your monthly support help build for youth in Douglas County.

We help kids and teens who are struggling—feeling isolated, anxious,

or unsure of themselves—find solid ground again.

Through meaningful time with animals and caring relationships with adult mentors,
they begin to feel safe enough to open up.

They learn to manage emotions, build trust, and develop confidence.
Most importantly, they begin to believe in themselves again.

You can see it in their posture, their laughter, and the way they start to show up in their lives
—at school, at home, and in their communities.

The Aspen Effect was created because there was a gap—too many young people needed help,
and not enough places to turn. Now in our third year, we’re committed to making sure every young person
in Douglas County has access to this kind of life-changing support.

You are part of this transformation.

By becoming a monthly donor, you provide steady, reliable support that helps us say “yes” to more youth.

Your monthly gift helps every child we serve continue to heal and grow:

🐎Animal care
🎨Program materials
🤲Training for mentors

Whether it’s $10 or $100, giving monthly makes a lasting difference—
because resilience doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s built over time, through relationships, encouragement, and consistency.

Help a young person feel seen, supported, and strong.

Mission

The Aspen Effect was created to create youth interactions that strengthen resilience and leadership that help prevent mental health crisis.

Background Statement

The Aspen Effect is one of the fastest growing 501C3 nonprofit organizations in Douglas County, where there continues to be a youth mental health crisis. At 14.7 suicides per 100,000, the youth suicide rate is higher than the national average of 10.7 per 100,000.

Now operating from Happy Dog Ranch in Sedalia, The Aspen Effect believes that all youth are strengthened by authentically connecting with people, animals and the outdoors. Their mission is to create youth interactions that strengthen resilience and leadership to help prevent mental health crisis. The Aspen Effect accomplishes this by matching youth with adult volunteer mentors and providing them with a unique ranch animal experience. Founder and Executive Director Jerry Van Leuven shares, “Something magical happens when a mini horse is able to remove emotional barriers and leave a youth standing next to a caring adult they’ve learned to trust.” Check out www.theaspeneffect.org for more information!
