$55,000 Goal

From pollution to drought to wildfires, we’re watching the devastating impacts of climate change unfold across the West.

Your gift for Colorado Gives Day means Western Resource Advocates can fight harder for sustainable access to water; for clean air for our children to breathe; and for a legacy of public lands for all to enjoy.

Join us to build a bright climate future.

RECENT WINS IN COLORADO

  • Protecting wetlands. After federal protections were gutted, WRA supported HB24-1379, legislation that restored safeguards for wetlands and streams. As a headwaters state, this bipartisan law – the first in the country – is critical to keeping Colorado’s wetlands healthy and will serve as a blueprint for other Western states to take action safeguarding these vital ecosystems.
  • Implementing a new fee on oil and gas production. Up to $50 million annually will be generated to restore wildlife habitat, improve ecosystem resilience, and remediate some of the adverse impacts of oil and gas operations, thanks to a new law supported by WRA.
  • Prohibiting nonfunctional turf to conserve water. Colorado will now prohibit the use of thirsty, non-native grass in seldom-used areas like parking lots, tree lawns, and road medians. WRA projects this will result in savings of 9,658 acre-feet per year by 2030 and 48,292 acre-feet per year by 2050, approximately the water demand of 145,000 Colorado households in a year.

TESTIMONIALS

"We have 3 young kids and giving them a healthy and beautiful world is important to us. We believe climate change is the greatest threat to their future, and we wanted to do something to be part of the solution. We researched buying solar panels but realized that we could leverage our money more effectively by donating to WRA. Also, sharing our good fortune with others is a value we wanted to teach our kids. While it may not be much, this is what we can do now."
- Erica C., Salt Lake City

"Wallace Stegner, novelist and avid Western environmentalist, said that preserving the West's natural resources 'is a means of reassuring ourselves of our sanity as creatures, a part of the geography of hope.' Through its thoughtful, balanced, and expertly implemented strategic vision, Western Resource Advocates brings precisely this reassurance, sanity and hope at such a critical time."
- Carla Hamre Donelson, WRA Board Member

"By leveraging a unique combination of legal, policy, and scientific expertise, WRA offers a thoughtful approach to addressing our era's most pressing environmental issues by working effectively across stakeholder groups to craft mutually beneficial solutions. The result is tangible movement toward a more sustainable future for communities, businesses, and ecosystems in the American West. I'm honored to serve on the WRA Board in such pivotal times."
- Jamie Starr, WRA Board Member

Mission

WRA fights climate change and its impacts to sustain the environment, economy, and people of the West.

Background Statement

Founded in 1989, WRA fights climate change and its impacts to sustain the environment, economy, and people of the West. We respect the unique needs of diverse communities and partner with them to develop a shared vision for progress - one that advances our communities while protecting biodiversity.

Our team has a 30-plus year history of working where decisions are made, sweating the details, creating evidence-based solutions, and holding decision makers accountable. The on-the-ground work of driving state action, with policymakers and other advocates, advances clean energy, protects air, land, water and wildlife - and sustains the livelihoods of the West.

While we have evolved over the years, our purpose remains the same: protect the West now and for future generations.
