Background Statement
Women's Resource Center of the Rockies opened its doors on May 19th, 2008 under the direction of Lisa Souba, founder and first executive director, along with an initial five-member board of directors formed in March of 2007. Summit, Eagle, Lake and Park counties all exhibit a definite need for our services, the need for a place where both men and women who are experiencing an unintended pregnancy can come to receive compassionate and non-judgmental care.
Nationally, almost 50% of pregnancies are unintended, and over 30% of those end in abortion. The rate of unplanned pregnancies in Summit County is estimated to be about 30%. Due to the transient nature of the young adult population in our resort area, young men and women facing an unintended pregnancy are often far removed from home and their family support network, increasing their feelings of isolation and despair.
Women's Resource Center of the Rockies addresses this need by providing men and women with free pregnancy tests and limited access to a free ultrasound as well as caring counsel and accurate information about all three options available to them: parenting, adoption and abortion, so that they possess the tools necessary to make an informed decision which is consistent with their values.
Over the past seven years, the center has steadily increased the number of clients it serves annually, and expanded its services to include educational programs for parents of infants and toddlers, a men's mentoring program and grief & loss support group counseling including miscarriage and abortion recovery groups. Ultrasound services provided on-site by a trained nurse practitioner and overseen by a local doctor were added in 2016.
