Wilderness Workshop

A nonprofit organization

Wilderness Workshop's mission is to protect and conserve the wilderness and natural landscapes of the Roaring Fork Watershed, the White River National Forest, and adjacent public lands.

From our home base in the Roaring Fork Valley, our team works to protect public lands and waters across Western Colorado - stretching from the Continental Divide to the Colorado Plateau and plenty of beloved places in between. Wilderness Workshop protects public lands from threats such as industrial development, climate change, and short-term exploitation, but perhaps more important is what we protect public lands for - intact and thriving ecosystems, a liveable planet for current and future generations, and the moment of awe that can only be experienced in a wild place.

For over 55 years, Wilderness Workshop has fought for permanent protections for wild places and to ensure community members have a voice as land management decisions are being made. As a trusted leader in the conservation community, we are committed to ensuring public lands are accessible and enjoyable for all, and that equity and justice are centered in public lands management. With our on-the-ground knowledge, deep expertise, and collaborative approach we're protecting the places you love and inspiring others to do the same. Join us.

Mission

Wilderness Workshop's mission is to protect the wilderness, water, and wildlife of Western Colorado’s public lands.

Background Statement

Wilderness Workshop (then known as the Aspen Wilderness Workshop) was founded in 1967 and incorporated as a 501c3 in 1976. For our first two decades, we focused on advocating for new wilderness in the Roaring Fork watershed, culminating in the designation of the Hunter-Fryingpan, Collegiate Peaks, Raggeds, and West Elks Wilderness Areas, and doubling the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area.

Today, we focus on safeguarding the ecological integrity of these wilderness areas, advocate for new wilderness, and defend roadless areas from development. We are the boots on the ground, monitoring and reviewing proposals on local public lands and we use our legal and policy expertise to educate, activate, and empower the public to effectively participate in federal agency decision-making.
