Background Statement
Western Resilience Center's roots are traced to 2006, when a group of dedicated City of Steamboat Springs staff and local residents came together to create the “Green Team” to centralize sustainability in city planning and community awareness. In 2008, the “Green Team ” transitioned leadership to a group of committed community members, who went on to establish the organization as a nonprofit, then known as Yampa Valley Sustainability Council.

Over 16 years, YVSC and community members like you have:
 - Planted over 32,000 trees that will grow strong and tall to keep the Yampa River healthy, create wildlife habitat, and store carbon.
 - Recycled more than 300,000 pounds of electronics reducing impacts from mining new materials and keeping these harmful materials out of our environment.
 - Trained 55 future climate leaders through our Internship Program since 2021.
 - Helped rethink the way we heat and cool our buildings to reduce our greatest source of emissions.
 - Made the Routt County Climate Action Plan, which our community uses for climate planning and decision-making, an instrument of change.
