The Western Institute for Advanced Study supports interdisciplinary research in mathematics, physics, and the biological sciences. We issue Grand Challenges to address historically-intractable problems in these fields, and we foster highly interdisciplinary efforts to promote scientific progress. The Institute was founded in 2019 and is based in Denver, Colorado.

The Western Institute for Advanced Study was founded in Denver, Colorado. With the knowledge that science can be a force for good in this world, the organization was created to foster critical thinking and to fuel economic progress through discovery.
From 2019, we have been tackling our first Grand Challenge. This work involved developing a theoretical framework for neural computation that describes how the human brain generates perceptual content and non-deterministic behavioral outcomes. With several publications establishing the existence of thermodynamic computation in peer-reviewed open-access journals, this effort is forging ahead with world-class academic collaborators to tackle the important philosophical implications and engineering applications of this approach.
From 2024, we have been tackling our second Grand Challenge. This effort involves bringing a new cancer drug to clinical trial. With a strong safety profile, and independently replicated preclinical efficacy data from multiple laboratories, and a star team of clinical partners, this effort is now prepared to move forward to benefit patients with aggressive tumors.
