Background Statement
Research studies demonstrate what the veterans we work with already know, that veterans and civilians, men and women, old and young, all benefit from taking the time to breathe easy, focus clearly, move mindfully, rest deeply, and remember gratitude. VYP has worked with tens of thousands of veterans and active-duty military men and women using these practices and many have found relief from symptoms as well as gained resilience against life’s challenges.
Veterans participating in these programs have reported that they sleep better, concentrate and think more clearly, manage anger and aggression more easily, and find comfort in their own skin. Yoga may not cure post-traumatic stress disorder, but many veterans and active-duty individuals from all branches and eras of services find these practices to be a significant and necessary part of their recovery. 80% of veterans reported a reduction in stress after attending a VYP class, and 64% of veterans reported a reduction in pain. VYP Colorado’s aim for this project is simple: Provide VYP’s life-changing classes more accessible to veterans; allowing them to find a path toward healing and strengthen their connection with other veterans.
The purpose of this request is to increase access to VYP’s in-person classes in Colorado and strengthen its veteran community through the healing practice of yoga. Funds will be used to host mindful resilience yoga classes at various locations throughout the grant period. Classes will be offered to veterans, active-duty service members, and their families at locations closest to where they live or receive other veteran-focused health services.
VYP Colorado wants to provide Colorado veterans, active-duty military members and their families access trauma recovery tools such as yoga and meditation. Specifically, VYP Colorado intends to: (1) educate veterans, their families and caregivers about the impact yoga, mindfulness and meditation may have on veterans’ physical and mental well-being, and; (2) work with VAs, Vet Centers, VSOs, large employers and like-minded nonprofit organizations to teach/offer mindful resilience yoga (MRY) classes to our nation’s retired and active-duty military personnel.
