Valley Veterans ReCreation

Valley Veterans ReCreation (VetRec) was established in 2022 by a group of veterans and outdoor enthusiasts who recognized the significant challenges veterans face and the pressing need for accessible resources. Initially established as the National Veterans Hiring Association, the organization focused on assisting veterans with their transition to civilian employment. However, in 2023 VetRec expanded its scope to address the broader social and emotional needs of veterans through outdoor recreational activities. This shift in focus led to the filing of a DBA, changing the organization’s name to Valley Veterans ReCreation.

Located in the beautiful landscapes of the San Luis Valley in Colorado, VetRec is dedicated to providing recreational activities and outdoor adventures that foster community, healing, and personal growth for veterans of all ages and backgrounds. The inspiration for VetRec came from the collective experiences of its founding board members, many of whom faced significant challenges transitioning back to civilian life. They understood that the great outdoors offers a unique space for healing and connection. By combining their love for outdoor activities with their commitment to supporting fellow veterans, they envisioned a place where veterans could find solace, build new skills, and form lasting bonds.

VetRec offers a range of programs designed to support the well-being of veterans, first responders, and their families. These programs include outdoor recreational activities like hiking, camping, and 4x4 social gatherings, social events such as coffee connections, and educational workshops like leatherworking, which help participants develop new skills and hobbies. In addition, we provide support programs such as mental health resources, peer support groups, and assistance with navigating available services, ensuring a comprehensive approach to meeting the needs of our community.

Since our inception, VetRec has become a vibrant community hub, attracting veterans from across the region. Our events and programs not only provide enjoyment but also serve as a crucial support network, helping veterans to overcome isolation, share their experiences, and support each other through the challenges of post-service life. Our mission has grown to encompass not only veterans but also first responders, recognizing their shared experiences and need for support. By extending our programs to include first responders, we aim to foster a broader community of healing and resilience.

Valley Veterans ReCreation serves active duty military, national guard, reserves, veterans, gold star families, first responders, and their families, primarily within the San Luis Valley and surrounding areas. Through our programs, we aim to meet the unique needs of these groups, providing them with a safe space to connect, heal, and thrive. Our mission is to honor and uplift veterans and first responders by fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging, making a lasting impact on their lives and our community.

As we continue to grow, we remain steadfast in our commitment to our core values of respect, inclusivity, and service. Our achievements are made possible through the generous support of our volunteers, donors, and partners. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected veteran community in Colorado.
