Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance

Do you ever wonder who takes care of the trails you love in Eagle County? A community of trail enthusiasts just like you, that's who. The Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance (VVMTA), formed 15 years ago, is proof that when our valley's residents love something, they come together to protect it.

People like Buck and Holly Elliot, our 2026 Supporters of the Year who were instrumental in securing our new office and safe space for machines, tools, and equipment. Or Volunteer Adopt a Trail Team of the year Vail Club 50, who's 57 volunteers logged 208 hours on Stag Gulch Trail. Or Youth Trail Steward of the year Robbie S., who in his second year with the Eagle County Youth Corps grew into a leader role, recruiting members, leading with hard work and positive attitude.

How Funds Are Used

We are a small but mighty team and our work is made possible by donors, 1,200+ yearly volunteers, and organizational partners. 

• Paid seasonal trail professional team of 8 working all summer on projects across the county with land managers and partner organizations 

• Manage the Eagle County VVMTA Adopt a Trail program in its 10th year with 63 teams, 1,000 volunteers, and more than 125 events each summer

• Soul Dirt "Outdoors for All" program guides hiking, biking, and backpacking trips. Removing barriers for access and providing healthy, healing opportunities to get outside, Soul Dirt builds a culture of stewardship across our entire community

• VVMTA's Eagle County Youth Corps, a summer job program for local high schoolers that introduces them to recreation management career paths

• Staff popular trailheads with 2 employees and volunteers promoting responsible recreation, preparedness, wildlife respect, and Leave No Trace principles

• Allow year round staff to apply for, plan, execute, and report on over $500,000 in yearly grants and matching funds to ensure our trail systems are protected and cared for. Grants awarded are often "reimbursement" models - meaning we need to have the financial capability to pay for hours, materials, and tools before we are reimbursed for work completed end of the season.

• Support and advocate for local efforts to improve trail systems (e.g. Eagle Phase II, Eagle-Vail Trail Extension, Tennessee Pass Rail To Trail, Arrowhead's Quiver and Mountain Trail). Many of these are multi-year projects requiring behind the scenes work long before approval and construction.

• Manage the VVMTA-built Eagle Bike Park and Minturn Bike Park in cooperation with local municipalities
