Our mission is to provide opportunities for incarcerated writers to imagine themselves as storytellers and sources of authentic knowledge, regardless of perceived skill, legal status, or formal training.

We bring writing centers into Colorado correctional facilities.

Our vision is to enact a culture of writing with and among incarcerated residents that is radically democratic in practice, sponsorship, and circulation.

To normalize publishing and circulation of work by incarcerated writers as valued human beings, masters of craft, and engaged citizens beyond their legal status.

To build a robust network of schools, nonprofits, publications, and community writing practitioners that supports system-impacted writers across Colorado and beyond.

Mission

To provide opportunities for incarcerated writers to imagine themselves as storytellers and sources of authentic knowledge, regardless of perceived skill, legal status, or formal training.

Background Statement

Unbound Authors started as two friends seeking a way to continue working with incarcerated writers in Colorado in March of 2023. Since then, we have been spending developing our ethos, and we are now offering onsite Writers Mentoring Labs in eight facilities across the Colorado Dept of Corrections and more through correspondence. We are deeply grateful for your support and would love your help in continuing our desire to "Empower voices behind bars" in 2024 and beyond.
