Background Statement

In 1972 The United Veterans Coalition of Colorado (UVC) developed out of the efforts of Vietnam veterans, enlisting the support of veterans from previous eras, to push for the jobs and benefits promised to them. Because their focus was on advocacy and lobbying for public policy at the federal and state levels, they later applied for and received a 501(c)(4) designation from the IRS - which allowed them to lobby on issues of importance to veterans, while staying out of partisan politics. During the first part of the 2000s, the leaders of the UVC recognized that they could expand their effectiveness and sources of support for veterans issues if they formed an allied 501(c)(3) to allow for tax deductible contributions and grants to help fund charitable and educational activities to further their service to veterans and their families. Under the leadership of Marvin Meyers, former President of the UVC, a group of UVC leaders began planning for the creation of the UVC Foundation. Their efforts resulted in the incorporation of the UVC Foundation through the Office of the Colorado Secretary of State in February of 2014. A Board of was formed, and they reached out for assistance to the recognized nonprofit attorney Cara Lawrence. With Ms. Lawrence’s dedicated assistance, an application to the IRS for 501(c)(3) designation was completed and submitted, including a mission statement, outline of proposed program activities, and organizational bylaws. The UVC Foundation received approval from the IRS for its 501(c)(3) designation on September 11, 2014, with Marvin Meyers as its first President.
