Background Statement
Founded in Boulder in 1989 and incorporated in 1993 by dancers and musicians, Turning the Wheel ignites our youth's innate creativity, spirit, and confidence through music, movement, and dance. Now in our 34th year, Turning the Wheel celebrates having touched the lives of over 125,000 people in 12 cities through over 1000 schools and organizations around the country. In Boulder County this year we will continue engaging youth and others with dynamic programming that truly meets participants where they are.
Many of the students we serve are high-risk youth and children who qualify for free lunch programs, as well as youngsters struggling with identity within the mainstream educational system. TTW uses models based on inclusiveness, community engagement, and collaboration, thereby reconnecting youth to their lives and society, encouraging a collective ethic of caring for the group, respecting others' differences, and becoming advocates for healthy lifestyle choices.
By giving youngsters an opportunity to play with imaginative ideas, processes, and movement we help them perform well in other academic fields. Our work helps prepare more young people to play a vital role in the new economy that will depend to a large degree on people who have the skills to imagine new ways of seeing things, to innovate!
As individuals, as facilitators, and as social change artists we raise our voices alongside those seeking racial justice in America. Our work strives to instill an appreciation of diversity and the value of each community member.
