“In times of dread, artists must never remain silent. This is when we go to work. There's no room for despair, self-pity, or fear.

We speak, we write, we do language.”

-   Toni Morrison

As this year draws to its close, we at The Word are reflecting on the inspiring commitment of our community, the imperatives of this moment, and the work we can build together from here. Your dedication to courageous literature has been so vital in a period of undeniable turbulence, and we know it will be essential for the path ahead.

With our focus on the voices, stories, and craft of writers and readers outside the mainstream – especially from BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled and neurodivergent communities – our organization fell squarely in this year's cuts to federal arts funding.

We see this contraction as a signal for the even deeper urgency of our work. We know that literature offers a powerful, crucial intervention – and with you, we've seen just how far literature can be transformed through new focuses on craft, community, and career development.

You have shown exceptional dedication to one another and to this work throughout The Word's programming, and we hope we can count on you to sustain this work in 2026.

Please consider making a gift to The Word to help us reach a necessary $15,000 year-end goal by December 31.

With support from our friends at Libro.fm, donors through December 31 will receive 1 free audio book for giving at the $50 level; 2 free audio books at the $100 level; and 3 free audio books at the $250 level.

With a donation of $50 or more, you'll be entered into a lottery to receive a personalized reading list from Lupita Reads, and all donors are entered into the lottery to receive a free writing workshop through our Word Unbound series!

We wish you rest as the year comes to a close, and we hope you will follow along with us as we look to the future of our work starting this Giving Tuesday – and thank you so much for being a part of this community.
