In Loving Memory of Ryan Mark Marshall

themarshalleffect was established in 2019 after the suicide death of Ryan Mark Marshall.

Ryan was a kind, loving, fun, maddeningly athletic, compassionate individual.  His tragic death was just that – a tragic death!

From the grief of losing Ryan an idea emerged that might lift spirits and offer a way to remember and honor Ryan by preventing such tragedy from befalling more families. The mission of themarshalleffect started as a way to share the helping spirit of Ryan by posting random acts of kindness on the website. What emerged was a powerful program of, not only suicide awareness, but actual PREVENTION through collaborations with providers to fund evidence-based therapy for up to a full year to individuals in financial need.

Themarshalleffect collaborates with several therapy providers serving the Denver area, Fort Collins, and Boulder/Longmont to provide evidence-based therapy known as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for individuals at risk of suicide. DBT providers identify an individual/family who qualifies for our assistance (i.e. the client is at risk of suicide, has attempted suicide, or experiences suicidal ideation, and is financially unable to pay for or continue paying for the program).  No restrictions are made other than these qualifiers. This approach ensures that such decisions are in the hands of qualified therapists and there is no conflict of interest with themarshalleffect.  Additionally, it provides that HIPPA standards are strictly adhered to.

DBT therapy is a multi-pronged year-long approach that includes weekly individual sessions with a counselor and a weekly "group skills" session, which provides practical ways of dealing with emotional responses to stressors. The therapist is also available for phone calls as needed.  If the client is a youth, the parents can be involved with individual counseling and/or group skills sessions to teach them how to respond effectively to their child. The therapy groups that collaborate with themarshalleffect offer a discounted rate for our clients, and the clients themselves are required to pay a co-pay that they can afford.  This policy is based on the knowledge that when clients pay, they remain more committed to their therapy.

To date themarshalleffect has directly financed therapy for over forty people, with a cost to us of over 145K. People who can now live a life truly worth living!

Mission

The mission of #themarshalleffect is to promote awareness and provide support for individuals who are at risk of self-harm or suicide, or who are victims of partner abuse. We also wish to carry on Ryan’s legacy of helping others through activities that reflect his spirit as well as the challenges he faced in his own life.

Specifically, we seek to achieve the following:

1) To work in collaboration with schools and mental health providers in an effort to identify youth and young adults who are at risk of self-harm or suicide and offer a sponsorship program to financially support long term access to appropriate care for those in financial need.

2) To offer a sponsorship program to provide effective mental health therapy for youth and young adults who are victims of partner abuse.

3) To provide volunteer opportunities to people of all ages in an effort to continue Ryan’s legacy of kindness. We believe volunteerism wins all around. It helps establish trust and respect between volunteers, offers rewards of knowing you are helping others, all while providing support to the community.

Background Statement

Following the 2018 suicide of 22-year-old Ryan Mark Marshall, our son, grandson, cousin, friend, and coworker, we established themarshalleffect with the intent not just to talk about this problem, but to act to resolve it. To that end, themarshalleffect established collaborations with mental health providers along the front range of Colorado, to provide up to a full year of evidence-based therapy to individuals at risk of suicide, but whom are financially unable to fund their treatment.

Suicide affects family, friends, and the community, and is a lost opportunity for its victims to live happy, productive lives. themarshalleffect is working hard to change that!
