The Haven

A nonprofit organization

The Haven believes that community members deserve the opportunity to age in place and remain a part of our community near family and friends. Every day we provide affordable assisted living, offering all the comforts of home to seniors who no longer can, or want to live alone.

Testimonials

The Haven was the perfect place for my father for 4+ years. The small size allows for the staff and residents to really get to know each other and form bonds. When visiting, it is very common to see the residents either sitting in the lobby together or else having fun in the common area playing bingo, keno, or games, or working on crafts, or putting a puzzle together. Their monthly calendar is packed full of daily activities, whether it is a trip to the library/WalMart/grocery store or out to lunch, or a scenic drive to Steamboat Lake, a visit from some local horses needing some petting (and apple slices), or visiting children with fun craft ideas and games, fireplace music, wellness games...the list goes on and on. They have a salon for hair and nail care. Their cook creates a huge selection of wonderful meals. One resident was allowed to use the kitchen to bake her favorite cookie recipe. Another loved to wash dishes, so guess what he got to do anytime he wanted? These are just a few examples of the individual attention each resident receives. The staff are all caring and wonderful and go out of their way to make sure each person gets the care they deserve - and there were a few tears when my father had to move. Please check out The Haven for your loved ones!

Mission

The Haven Assisted Living provides a home for seniors 55 years or older who do not require skilled nursing care but no longer can, or want, to live alone.

Background Statement

Hayden, Colorado is a small rural community in the Northwest region of the state. As in many communities, there are older adults living alone in their homes who are no longer capable of safely caring for themselves or maintaining their homes. These seniors often are reluctant to relocate to care facilities or to live with family outside the comfort and familiarity of the Yampa Valley, where some have lived their entire lives.

In 1992, a group of concerned local residents began a campaign to build an assisted living residence where seniors could live in a safe environment and receive nutritious meals, help with medication management, social opportunities and other assistance. Backed by strong community support, the project garnered a loan from the USDA, grants and private donations. Peabody Energy, which operates the Twentymile Mine near Hayden, donated the land for the 9,700-square-foot facility, and construction began in the fall of 1995. The Haven opened in July 1996 under the ownership of the West Routt Rural Health Council.

Northwest Colorado Health acquired The Haven in 2005. The nonprofit organization, which provides health services in Routt and Moffat counties, continues to operate The Haven. In 2007, Northwest Colorado Health completed construction of The Haven Community Center, expanding opportunities for exercise classes, programs and social connection for Haven residents and seniors throughout the community. The Haven employs 22 full- and part-time staff and offers respite care in addition to assisted living services.
