As a hub for healing community, social action, and creative collaboration serving in the North Denver area since 2006, The Refuge catalyzes all we do around our shared values of Presence, Engagement, Transformation, Welcome, Creativity, and Celebration.

Cornerstone to our work is the Refuge Cafe, a place for presence, hospitality and connection to resources for people experiencing homelessness and without social safety nets. Open three days a week, the Cafe provides free lunch, showers, on-site advocates, social workers, health care advocates, and community partners, outdoor supplies, and empowerment through healing community.

An extension of the Refuge Cafe--the Broomfield Cares Mobile Outreach team--is a mobile partnership bringing the hospitality of the Cafe to the community on days we're not open and making connection with people who are not currently accessing local resources.

Another core outreach of the Refuge is Single Moms Unite--a supportive community for single moms and their kids--that offers monthly gatherings, special events, and intentional support for single moms to thrive.

Other regular Refuge gatherings include a wide spectrum of possibilities for people to connect in community, develop skills, learn, catalyze community change, and grow. These include: Spiritual Formation Sunday; Refuge Kids programs; Refuge Rainbow--Queer Supports and Socials for LGBTQ+ Youth, Allies, and Parents; 12 Steps for Anti-Racism Work group; Refuge Reads--free community literacy program for kids-grownups who are behind in reading, writing and spelling; Advocates Learning Lab--skills, support, and sustainability for people who journey with people in hard places; Refuge Recovery--open 12 step group across addictions and unhealthy patterns; House of Refuge--eclectic spiritual conversations; Nature Heals--outdoor contemplative experiences; in addition to art workshops, social justice learning experiences, mental health support opportunities, and annual events that are accessible for all.

Mission

The Refuge is a community-driven hub for healing, social action, and creative collaboration that catalyzes accessible and innovative programs to meet crucial community needs.

Background Statement

Since we started our work in 2006, the Refuge has always been dedicated to healing community, shared leadership, and playing our unique role in the wider community. Before moving into our current location in 2013, we spent three years in different rented facilities and five years in a Grange Hall. With the leasing of a stable space in Broomfield, we were able to found The Refuge Cafe as an intentional outreach center for people without social safety nets. Our work has greatly expanded since then. In 2020, we formed the Broomfield Cares Mobile Outreach Team to extend the resources of the Cafe on days we’re not open. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve watched the need for our services grow; we’ve responded by continuing to evolve into an eclectic community center that meets the multitude of needs faced by some of the most vulnerable community members.
